The arts fuel Bellingham economy

While most appreciate the intrinsic benefits of the arts, recent studies demonstrate a vibrant arts and cultural scene contributes to a strong local economy as well. According to a recent Arts & Economic Prosperity study of 156 U.S. communities, the non-profit art sector generated $166.2 billion in economic activity, and supported 5.7 million jobs generating $29.6 billion in government revenue.

For Bellingham, the study found that the not-for-profit art sector supported 511 jobs and generated $14.1 million in local economic activity for the fiscal year 2005.

Bellingham previously participated in this study in 2000, which indicated this sector was supporting at least 354 local jobs at that time. Nationally, the non-profit arts industry was found to have grown by 24% between 2000 and 2005.

The study included only the non-profit arts in Bellingham, not the extensive for-profit arts community as well. Researchers considered the impact of direct expenditures by non-profit arts and culture organizations as well as the impact of audience spending

In addition to attracting tourism dollars, a strong arts and cultural sector helps stimulate new start-up businesses. Jobs in this sector are rooted in the community and cannot be transferred overseas. Cities around the world are competing to attract entrepreneurs and talented, creative young professionals. International studies show that these individuals are attracted to communities rich in arts and cultural opportunities. The conclusion of the Arts & Economic Prosperity III study was "As the arts flourish, so will creativity and innovation - the fuel that drives our global economy."

Thirteen nonprofit arts and culture organizations in Bellingham collected data for the study, paid for by a grant from the Bellingham Arts Commission.
