Holly Street improvements welcome people downtown

Holly Street Gateway

Holly Street gateway improvements are nearly complete, with streetlights, signals and power line work now underway.

Improvements from Lakeway / Ellis to State Street so far include replacement of all curb, gutter and sidewalks, new street plantings, road resurfacing, sidewalk bulb-outs and enhanced crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety when crossing this busy street.

The local firm of Strider Construction is the primary contractor, with several local subcontractors working on the numerous construction components of this complex job.

While construction is never easy, motorists through the job site consistently demonstrated patience and courtesy to construction workers and to each other. "Our community has shown it's true character while enduring this major traffic disruption." said Strider Project Manager Stan LaNois. "The workers felt safe, which added to their efficiency and resulted in the project staying on time and within budget."

The Holly Street Gateway Improvements Project was listed number three on the 2006-2011 Transportation Improvement Plan, approved in June of 2005. The project is estimated to cost just over $2 million. Funding is coming from the Street Fund and second quarter Real Estate Excise Tax, which is commonly used for pedestrian and bicycle improvements. The Holly Street improvements are part of the city's ongoing efforts to revitalize downtown. Future projects will include undergrounding power lines in various alleys and streetscape improvements in the Arts District.
