The Bellingham Arts Commission has issued a call for art for a maximum of eight outdoor artworks to be installed at key pedestrian locations in Bellingham. VELoCITY - an Outdoor Art Show aims to celebrate and emphasize the power of art in public spaces. Formerly known as the Civic Center Sculpture Show, this year's public art competition will expand beyond the boundaries of City Hall and the Bellingham Public Library to include the surrounding Arts District.

"The theme of the show is Back to Center, to highlight this time of change and revitalization in Bellingham's downtown," said Alexandra Wiley, Chair of the Bellingham Arts Commission. "By providing a stipend of $1,000 for each selected artist, and high-profile public locations for the artworks to be displayed, we hope to receive many submittals from which to choose our eight finalists."

The artworks may be offered for sale with 25% of the retail price be retained by the City of Bellingham for continued support of public art. The final art pieces are expected to be installed late next summer, and will remain in their designated location until spring of 2010.

Potential locations for art installations include the Whatcom Museum's Old City Hall Building, the Bellingham Public Library, City Hall, the new Art Museum and Children's Museum facility, the Mount Baker Theatre, and Bay, Champion, and Grand streets.

Completed entries are due March 28, 2008 by 5:00 p.m. in the Planning & Community Development office in City Hall. For further details see the entry requirements (PDF) or contact Shannon Victoria, City of Bellingham Planning & Community Development Department, (360) 676-6880, svictoria@cob.org
