Restoration project improves Chuckanut Bay health

Chuckanut Villiage Marsh

Plans to improve water quality and protect wildlife habitat in the Chuckanut Village Marsh are complete, with construction expected to begin in 2010 after local, state and federal permits are obtained.

Located at the north end of Chuckanut Bay, the Chuckanut Village Marsh is a rare marsh providing habitat for a range of fresh and salt water wildlife communities, including heron, eagles, osprey, red fox, deer, salmon, steelhead, salamanders, ducks, clams and more.

Recent studies indicate that the health of this ecosystem is in jeopardy, with symptoms of stress including declining salmon stocks, recreational shellfish bed closures, and degradation of eelgrass beds and other marine habitats. Restoration of this marsh, including culvert removal, beach restoration and moving parking away from the shoreline, was identified as a priority by City and Whatcom County officials.
