Climate Action for Peace – International Day of Peace
September 21 , 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Event Details: Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. For the past 17 years, the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center (WPJC) has hosted a local event in celebration of the date. For this year, we are following the UN theme, Climate Action for Peace, in recognition of the importance of combatting climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.
Climate change causes clear threats to international peace and security. Natural disasters displace three times as many people as conflicts, forcing millions to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. The growing tensions over wealth and mass movements of people are affecting every country on every continent. Peace can only be achieved if concrete action is taken to combat climate change and understand its connections to systems of oppression, poverty, racism, ableism, gender inequity and colonialism.
Join us to welcome Women of Color Speak Out as our keynote speakers for this event, which will include music by the Sweet Goodbyes, poetry by Lummi writer Rena Priest, an amazing selection of silent auction items from local businesses and nature artists, and the opportunity to engage with several different active organizations in town. We will also reveal the recipient of the Harris Howard Award and help raise funds for the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center. Entry is free of charge, but donations are encouraged. ASL interpretation and free child care will be provided throughout the event.
