International Day of Peace

For its 20th year anniversary, the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center is organizing a multi-day celebration of International Day of Peace with a virtual keynote appearance of Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz at the Pickford, followed by an intergenerational peacemaker awards. You can watch a recording of Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz’s speech and the Peacemaker Award Celebration during Climate Action Week starting on September 21, when the content will be uploaded online. Or, join the event in person prior to Climate Action Week at the Depot Market Square on September 11 (includes ASL interpretation).

Virtual Premiere on September 21: The pre-recorded content will be posted at 6 p.m. on September 21 on the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.

In-Person Event on September 11:

• 12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Virtual Keynote Speech and Q&A with award-winning author and activist, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay Street)
• 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: Peacemaker Award Ceremony with live music, ASL interpretation and children activities at Depot Market Square (1100 Railroad Ave)

International Day of Peace keynote speech, Peacemaker Awardees and activities will center discussions and information related to systemic exploitation, militarism and settler colonialism, which are deeply connected to climate change. This is connected to the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center’s belief that the promotion of peace and social justice are interwoven elements of sustainability and care for the environment.

Additional event partners include the Pickford Film Center and City of Bellingham.

Prize Drawing/Event Feedback

Receive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! Three prize drawing winners will be selected to choose between a solar backpack, waterproof bike bag, energy efficiency kit, or zero waste shopping kit. 

For each entry, you must submit a brief online feedback form for the event you attended and include a unique codeword for that event. Obtain the codeword for International Day of Peace by emailing bhamclimateweek@gmail.com.
