SUMMARY:NSEA Salmon Spotters Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Spotters is a brand new citizen science project! Organized by the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\, this short training covers the basics of the salmon lifecycle\, how to ID different salmon species\, and best practices for completing observations. As a Salmon Spotter volunteer\, you visit a creek site of your choice that currently (or historically) supports salmon for 15 minutes twice a week throughout the fall and submit your data through an online form. That’s it! It’s that easy to support salmon monitoring in Whatcom County.Salmon return to freshwater every year to spawn\, but the timing and locations of these “runs” can be severely impacted by climate change. Extreme events like flooding and droughts and changes in seasonal weather patterns can drastically change the availability and quality of salmon habitat. With your help NSEA is looking to increase our capacity to monitor local creeks and collect valuable data on when and where salmon are spotted each year. DESCRIPTION:Please join Stillpoint at Beckside for a guided Forest Bathing/Nature Therapy experience on Saturday\, Sept. 23\, 9am -12pm on Stillpoint’s 5 acres of sacred earth with beautiful trees. \n\n\n\nForest Bathing\, also referred to as Nature Therapy\, is a practice of soaking up sights\, sounds\, and the feel of our natural environment. This event offers an opportunity to experience a nourishing form of embodied self-care. There are studies showing that\, for some people\, ongoing experiences of Forest Bathing can be especially beneficial for those who are called to help heal the broken relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn a climate changed world\, healing of all life happens TOGETHER\, or not at all. The medicine that brings healing is in experiencing our interconnection. DESCRIPTION:This is an experiential and interactive event that allows participants to share their hopes\, solutions\, visions and ideas for health and wholeness given our climate changed world. We embrace the idea that as a community we can both imagine and then act in collaborative fashion\, joining together to envision new possibilities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Echoes of the Heart Ensemble improv actors listen and then play back participants’ insights by enacting the stories through short skits\, improvised movement\, and music. The results are typically insightful\, often funny\, and sometimes quite poignant.Allowing participants to tell their stories of how climate change impacts their well-being as well that of their families and community creates a space for people to digest their experiences as well as share their hopes\, inspirations\, and visions for the future. DESCRIPTION:Pickford Film Center presents Pom Poko\, directed by one of the two founders of Studio Ghibli\, Takahata Isao\, who has also directed Only Yesterday\, Grave of the Fireflies\, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya\, among other films. Pom Poko concerns a group of tanuki\, often translated as “raccoon dogs.” These are animals native to Japan who have appeared in folklore and children’s songs for hundreds of years\, in which they are reputed to have shape-shifting powers similar to fox spirits.  \n\n\n\nIn this film\, a group of tanuki near Tokyo decide to combat the encroaching suburbanization of their habitat in some very direct – and fanciful – ways. DESCRIPTION:This will be a guided bike tour that highlights homes in the Kulshan Community Land Trust and ends at their newest development project that will be built with climate resilience in mind. At the end location\, the climate resilient features of the homes will be presented and discussed by either the architect or representative board member. SUMMARY:Fall Equinox Wild Church: Listening to Creation
DESCRIPTION:Our world is changing\, and it impacts not just humans but all that we share this planet with. As a part of Bellingham’s ALL IN for Climate Action Week\, Echoes Bellingham is gathering on the land\, to listen to the voice of creation. We’ll welcome the Fall Equinox\, honor the changing of the season and listen deeply to the earth and the sounds of creation who are crying out in the face of constant climate change. All are welcome to this gathering where the bulk of our time will be spent wandering in the wild. Fall is a season that offers so much to us if we take time to honor the transformation is beckons us into.  \n\n\n\nWe are grateful to once again partner with and join on the land of Stillpoint at Beckside!  \n\n\n\nAs a small action of solidarity we will take a free will offering for the Center for Responsible Forestry\, a volunteer run organization that advocates for the conservation of older forests on DNR managed land in Southwest Washington and the greater Puget Sound region. The health and protection of our forests is vital to the flourishing of all.  \n\n\n\nWe encourage wearing layers as well as warm clothing for walking as the weather changes. This is a rain or shine event\, so please dress accordingly to the Northwest weather.
