Join local forest policy expert Alexander Harris (RE Sources) on a hike through managed timberlands and mature forests to learn about the promises and challenges of “ecological forest management” – a new approach that balances the economic\, ecological\, and cultural benefits that our forests can provide. DESCRIPTION:Join Deborah Giles\, Research Director at Wild Orca\, and her scent detection dog\, Eba\, for an in-person presentation about their one-of-a-kind orca research methods. Learn how the Wild Orca research team monitors Southern Resident Killer Whales’ health using the superpower of a dog’s nose to remain further away from the whales they monitor\, making their research non-invasive. \n\n\n\nWild Orca collaborates with government scientists and other researchers to enhance understanding of the many impacts on these endangered whales from overfishing\, pollution and noise. They also collaborate with the most respected names in wildlife conservation research to paint a near real-time picture of the health of endangered Southern Resident killer whales\, and provide timely data to the public and management agencies used to understand and address the causes of population decline.Giles represents Wild Orca’s interests with policymakers\, and is frequently interviewed by print and broadcast media as one of the principal voices calling for the recovery of these endangered orcas. \n\n\n\nThis event is hosted by Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship and the Endangered Species Coalition\, in partnership with Mt. DESCRIPTION:In the face of increasing fire risk and impacts on the Westside of the Cascades\, our community is hosting a wildfire resilience and education night at Structures Brewing on Holly Street. Doors open at 6 p.m. Starting at 7 p.m.\, there will be a small panel of local fire experts who are able to speak to home hardening\, wildfire resilience\, fire ecology and adapting to smoke in the Bellingham area. Panelists include: Jennifer Coe\, the community resilience coordinator for the Washington DNR in Western Washington; Stuart Illson\, a smoke researcher at the Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Laboratory; and Karen Kopper\, the fire ecologist for North Cascades National Park. The panel will be moderated by Amanda Monthei\, a Bellingham community member who runs a podcast about wildfire ecology and resilience. The panel will be followed by Q&A. There will also be educational booths from a variety of local organizations related to fire resilience\, land stewardship\, home hardening\, preparing for emergencies of all types and other relevant topics. SUMMARY:NSEA Salmon Spotters Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Spotters is a brand new citizen science project! Organized by the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\, this short training covers the basics of the salmon lifecycle\, how to ID different salmon species\, and best practices for completing observations. As a Salmon Spotter volunteer\, you visit a creek site of your choice that currently (or historically) supports salmon for 15 minutes twice a week throughout the fall and submit your data through an online form. That’s it! It’s that easy to support salmon monitoring in Whatcom County.Salmon return to freshwater every year to spawn\, but the timing and locations of these “runs” can be severely impacted by climate change. Extreme events like flooding and droughts and changes in seasonal weather patterns can drastically change the availability and quality of salmon habitat. With your help NSEA is looking to increase our capacity to monitor local creeks and collect valuable data on when and where salmon are spotted each year. There are studies showing that\, for some people\, ongoing experiences of Forest Bathing can be especially beneficial for those who are called to help heal the broken relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn a climate changed world\, healing of all life happens TOGETHER\, or not at all. The medicine that brings healing is in experiencing our interconnection. You can attend one or both of the following events:  \n\n\n\nVirtual Webinar/Q&A\n\n\n\nMonday\, September 19\, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  \n\n\n\nDuring the Sept. 19\, 6:30 p.m. Zoom session\, you’ll learn how to… \n\n\n\nfind the most climate-significant trees in your neighborhood\,recognize and safely\, easily remove silent-killer English ivy from neighborhood tree trunks on private or public property\,organize small neighborhood teams to remove such invasives;become a tree ivy “spotter” and advocate for your neighborhood;find the correct COB tree rules for your property or neighborhood\,report unauthorized tree removals — ideally before they occur\,advocate for stronger big urban tree protections\, and more.\n\n\n\nFollow-up Fun Work Party at Whatcom Falls Park\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 25\, 9 a.m. to noon \n\n\n\nOur free follow-up work party at Whatcom Falls Park on Sunday\, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon will be hands-on to remove English ivy from trees — without special tools\, skills\, or tree-climbing required. SUMMARY:Pom Poko Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Pickford Film Center presents Pom Poko\, directed by one of the two founders of Studio Ghibli\, Takahata Isao\, who has also directed Only Yesterday\, Grave of the Fireflies\, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya\, among other films. Pom Poko concerns a group of tanuki\, often translated as “raccoon dogs.” These are animals native to Japan who have appeared in folklore and children’s songs for hundreds of years\, in which they are reputed to have shape-shifting powers similar to fox spirits.  \n\n\n\nIn this film\, a group of tanuki near Tokyo decide to combat the encroaching suburbanization of their habitat in some very direct – and fanciful – ways.
