SUMMARY:NSEA Salmon Spotters Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Salmon Spotters is a brand new citizen science project! Organized by the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\, this short training covers the basics of the salmon lifecycle\, how to ID different salmon species\, and best practices for completing observations. As a Salmon Spotter volunteer\, you visit a creek site of your choice that currently (or historically) supports salmon for 15 minutes twice a week throughout the fall and submit your data through an online form. That’s it! It’s that easy to support salmon monitoring in Whatcom County.Salmon return to freshwater every year to spawn\, but the timing and locations of these “runs” can be severely impacted by climate change. Extreme events like flooding and droughts and changes in seasonal weather patterns can drastically change the availability and quality of salmon habitat. With your help NSEA is looking to increase our capacity to monitor local creeks and collect valuable data on when and where salmon are spotted each year. This training is open to anyone interested in learning more about salmon and helping us collect data – no prior experience or knowledge required. \n\n\n\nLearn more on NSEA’s website! \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nFairhaven Park Picnic Shelter107 Chuckanut Drive Bellingham\, WA 98225 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nEmail: sbrown@n-sea.orgPhone: (360) 715-0283 \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the City’s ALL IN for Climate Action Week. Find a full list of events.

SUMMARY:Emotions & Insights in a Climate Changing World
DESCRIPTION:This is an experiential and interactive event that allows participants to share their hopes\, solutions\, visions and ideas for health and wholeness given our climate changed world. We embrace the idea that as a community we can both imagine and then act in collaborative fashion\, joining together to envision new possibilities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Echoes of the Heart Ensemble improv actors listen and then play back participants’ insights by enacting the stories through short skits\, improvised movement\, and music. The results are typically insightful\, often funny\, and sometimes quite poignant.Allowing participants to tell their stories of how climate change impacts their well-being as well that of their families and community creates a space for people to digest their experiences as well as share their hopes\, inspirations\, and visions for the future. We believe that by witnessing our fellow community members expressing their current fears\, struggles and challenges\, we are empowered to imagine and act in collaborative fashion\, joining together across differences to magnify our mutual aspirations for a vibrant future within a climate-changed city and world. This is a multigenerational event hosted by the Multifaith Network for Climate Justice (MNCJ)\, in collaboration with Echoes of the Heart Ensemble\, Resonance Path\, Unity of Bellingham\, and Stillpoint at Beckside. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nUnity Spiritual Center1095 Telegraph RoadBellingham\, WA 98228 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nEmail: minister@unitybellingham.org Phone: (916) 265-8364 \n\n\n\nThis event is part of the City’s ALL IN for Climate Action Week. Find a full list of events.

SUMMARY:Climate Action Survey
DESCRIPTION:Take the City of Bellingham’s new 10-minute survey to help shape our community’s climate future! Total greenhouse gas emissions have leveled off since the City started tracking emissions in 2000. To meet our community’s ambitious goals to reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change\, we are seeking feedback about community strategies that we can promote through programs\, policies\, regulations and incentives. Community input will inform a step-by-step plan with specific approaches to reduce emissions in homes and buildings\, increase the use of electric vehicles\, and use more energy from renewable sources. Learn more and take the survey on Engage Bellingham.  \n\n\n\nThe survey will close on October 6\, 2023. \n\n\n\nPhoto by Emily Goodin\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the City’s ALL IN for Climate Action Week. Find a full list of events.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Community Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the collective power of community with the City of Bellingham\, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\, and many other community partners for a volunteer work party in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service\, a federal holiday encouraging Americans to take an active role in improving their communities. The work party will take place on Saturday\, January 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Little Squalicum Park. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will restore habitat and improve water quality by planting native plants in and around the new Little Squalicum Estuary\, an important shoreline habitat that the City began constructing in 2022 as a place for young salmon to grow before migrating to the ocean. This work party is a unique opportunity for the community to directly contribute to the project’s construction. \n\n\n\nThrough this work\, we hope to exemplify the environmental justice movement\, which was inspired by Dr. King through his concern for the urban environment. Environmental justice embodies the principle that all people have the right to clean air\, water\, and soil\, as well as the right to live in safe and healthy communities. \n\n\n\nDonations for Birchwood Food Desert Fighters \n\n\n\nTo further support our community\, this event is partnering with the Birchwood Food Desert Fighters to accept donations for this organization’s work. Birchwood Food Desert Fighters works to promote greater food access and a sense of community through weekly events\, a network of food share boxes\, food delivery\, community farming\, advocacy\, and more. Work party participants are encouraged to bring donations such as shelf-stable milk and proteins\, unopened toiletries\, and laundry detergent to the work party to support the Fighters’ work. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nSpace at this event is limited and the estuary site will not be able to accommodate all volunteers. There will be additional work sites outside of the estuary. Registration is required to participate. You will receive additional information via email after registering for the event. \n\n\n\nRegister for this event\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho can join this event?\nEveryone! All ages and abilities are welcome. No previous volunteer experience is necessary. Please contact us at pkvolunteers@cob.org if you would like to request an accommodation or language interpretation. \n\n\n\n\nWhat do you provide and what should I bring? \nWe will provide tools\, gloves\, instruction\, snacks\, and free Tony’s coffee and Papa John’s pizza\, which are both being generously donated for this event. Please bring a water bottle\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and closed-toe shoes. \n\n\n\n\nWhat can I expect at the event?\nVolunteers will sign in and then be divided into small groups to begin volunteer work. We make sure to keep families and friends together in a group if requested. Volunteer work will include planting native trees and shrubs\, removing invasive plants\, and spreading mulch. \n\n\n\nThe event will conclude with closing remarks\, free pizza donated by Papa John’s\, and an optional tour of the Little Squalicum Estuary project. Various community organizations will have educational booths at the event to share more infomation about restoration work. \n\n\n\n\nWhy is this work important?\nVolunteers will plant native trees and shrubs\, which help filter pollutants from urban runoff to improve water quality\, stabilize streambanks to prevent erosion\, produce oxygen to improve air quality\, and provide food for fish and wildlife. These native plants will help protect the new 2.4-acre estuary\, benefitting the native species who will rely on it\, including Endangered Species Act-listed Puget Sound Chinook and priority species such as steelhead\, coho\, and southern resident killer whales. \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the Little Squalicum Estuary project?\nThe Little Squalicum Estuary project began construction in June 2022. The project will restore 4.85 total acres of coastal habitat including a 2.4-acre estuary and will remove a fish passage barrier. A significant portion of the project has been constructed but some of the work was delayed and will resume in December 2022/early 2023. \n\n\n\nFunding for this project is provided by: \n\n\n\n\nCity of Bellingham\n\n\n\nGreenways Levy\n\n\n\nWashington Department of Ecology Centennial Clean Water Program\n\n\n\nWashington Department of Ecology One-Time Grant Program\n\n\n\nWashington State Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account Grant Program\n\n\n\nWashington State Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program\n\n\n\nUS Fish and Wildlife Service National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant Program\n\n\n\nPort of Bellingham\n\n\n\nWhatcom County\n\n\n\nNooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\n\n\n\n\nA special thanks to Lehigh Northwest Cement Company\, Port of Bellingham\, Whatcom County\, and BNSF for their coordination on this project. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDirections: This event takes place at Little Squalicum Park at 640 Marine Drive. The sign-in area will be in the Northeast section of the park. Due to construction of the estuary\, it is easiest to access the park from the Bellingham Technical College (BTC) parking lot on the north side of BTC\, located off of W. Illinois Street. To get here\, travel northwest on Eldridge Avenue until it turns into Marine Drive\, then turn right onto W. Illinois. Turn right into the BTC parking lot and follow work party signs to the blue tents. Technology and energy system changes alone won’t solve the problem. Responding to climate change means not only reducing our carbon emissions\, but capturing what’s already increasingly in the atmosphere. Trees play a major role in the latter and enhance our climate resilience to floods\, heat waves\, etc. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing and sharing with you — for the trees! \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP for either of these events on the Whatcom Million Trees Project website. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nSept. 19 Webinar: Hosted virtually on Zoom. SUMMARY:Pom Poko Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Pickford Film Center presents Pom Poko\, directed by one of the two founders of Studio Ghibli\, Takahata Isao\, who has also directed Only Yesterday\, Grave of the Fireflies\, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya\, among other films. Pom Poko concerns a group of tanuki\, often translated as “raccoon dogs.” These are animals native to Japan who have appeared in folklore and children’s songs for hundreds of years\, in which they are reputed to have shape-shifting powers similar to fox spirits. \n\n\n\nIn this film\, a group of tanuki near Tokyo decide to combat the encroaching suburbanization of their habitat in some very direct – and fanciful – ways. The result is highly entertaining for young and old while also being one of the strongest environmental parables from an animation studio that has always been concerned with the natural world and our place in it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nTickets for this 1:45 p.m. showing of Pom Poko on Saturday\, September 24 can be purchased on the Pickford’s website. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nPickford Film Center1318 Bay StreetBellingham\, WA 98225 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nEmail: info@pickfordfilmcenter.org Phone: (360) 647-1300 \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! There will be a discussion panel immediately following this 90-minute film. \n\n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis\n“When Jennifer Abbott lost her sister to cancer\, her sorrow opened her up to the profound gravity of climate breakdown. Abbott’s new documentary\, The Magnitude of All Things\, draws intimate parallels between the experiences of grief—both personal and planetary. Stories from the frontlines of climate change merge with recollections from the filmmaker’s childhood on Ontario’s Georgian Bay. What do these stories have in common? The answer\, surprisingly\, is everything. \n\n\n\nFor the people featured\, climate change is not happening in the distant future: it is kicking down the front door. Battles waged\, lamentations of loss and raw testimony coalesce into an extraordinary tapestry\, woven together with raw emotion and staggering beauty that transform darkness into light\, grief into action.” \n\n\n\nView the trailer here. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Panelists: \n\n\n\nRev.
