SUMMARY:Earth Day Community Work Party at Sehome Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Join the more than 1 billion people worldwide who celebrate Earth Day by joining the City of Bellingham\, WWU LEAD\, Whatcom Million Trees Project\, and Washington Trails Association for a volunteer work party. Together\, we will restore habitat in the Sehome Arboretum by planting native trees\, removing invasive species\, spreading mulch\, and more. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nWhen and where is the event? This event will take place on Saturday\, April 22 from 9 a.m. to noon in and near the Sehome Arboretum. We will meet in the Western Washington University (WWU) parking lot located near the intersection of Billy Frank Jr. Street and East Ivy Street. Learn more below. \n\n\n\nWhat will we be doing? We will remove invasive species such as English Ivy\, Himalayan Blackberry\, and Clematis in the area. Using the Miyawaki Method\, we will plant a variety of native trees in an ecologically degraded area. Hannah Lewis – author of a book about the Miyawaki Method – will join for the work party and will give a brief talk after the event. She is also presenting about the Miyawaki Method at WWU on Thursday\, April 20. The talk is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nWho can participate? All ages and abilities are welcome at this event. No previous volunteer experience is required. Please contact us at pkvolunteers@cob.org if you would like to request an accommodation or language interpretation. \n\n\n\nWhat should I bring? We provide tools\, gloves\, snacks\, and free coffee and pizza donated by Woods Coffee and Papa Johns. Please bring closed-toe shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and a water bottle. \n\n\n\nHow do I sign up? Spots are limited. Please register for this event in advance. \n\n\n\nRegister now!\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nMap of work party location\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDirections: Please meet at the tents set up in WWU’s 7G Parking Lot at the North end of campus near the intersection of Billy Frank Jr. Street and East Ivy Street. There is limited parking available in the 7G Parking Lot\, which will be free for the event. Please do not park in any spots labeled 3R as these are reserved for WWU residents. There is additional street parking located on nearby streets including Billy Frank Jr. Street\, High Street\, and N. Garden Street. \n\n\n\nTravel by bus: There are bus stops along High Street and Billy Frank Jr. Street that are within walking distance of the work party site. Find your bus route using the online trip planner at ridewta.com. \n\n\n\nTravel by bike: There are bike lanes along Billy Frank Jr. Street leading to the site. Find your bike route at cob.org/bike or on GoogleMaps. Let’s Bike Bellingham is offering a free bike valet service at the event! \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the Miyawaki Method? \nThe Miyawaki Method re-creates the conditions needed for a native forest to grow in decades\, rather than centuries. This method is focused on planting forests rather than trees\, the benefits of which include ecosystem function\, carbon sequestration\, habitat creation\, temperature regulation\, and low maintenance costs once established. As they mature\, Miyawaki forests are ecologically functional and biodiverse. They are well suited to urban environments because they can grow in areas as small as six parking spots. They have been planted in former parking lots\, medians\, along highways\, behind schools\, and in other degraded sites around the world. Learn more about the Miyawaki Method during a presentation by Hannah Lewis at WWU on Thursday\, April 20. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMore Earth Week Events\n\n\n\n\nIf you can’t make it to the 9 a.m. event\, WWU LEAD is hosting an additional work party at Sehome Arboretum from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the same day. Register here for the afternoon event.\n\n\n\nThe City is hosting several events during the week leading up to Earth Day 2023. Find a full list of events. \n\n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nPhone: (360) 778-7105Email: pkvolunteers@cob.org

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Community Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the collective power of community with the City of Bellingham\, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\, and many other community partners for a volunteer work party in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service\, a federal holiday encouraging Americans to take an active role in improving their communities. The work party will take place on Saturday\, January 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Little Squalicum Park. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will restore habitat and improve water quality by planting native plants in and around the new Little Squalicum Estuary\, an important shoreline habitat that the City began constructing in 2022 as a place for young salmon to grow before migrating to the ocean. This work party is a unique opportunity for the community to directly contribute to the project’s construction. \n\n\n\nThrough this work\, we hope to exemplify the environmental justice movement\, which was inspired by Dr. King through his concern for the urban environment. Environmental justice embodies the principle that all people have the right to clean air\, water\, and soil\, as well as the right to live in safe and healthy communities. \n\n\n\nDonations for Birchwood Food Desert Fighters \n\n\n\nTo further support our community\, this event is partnering with the Birchwood Food Desert Fighters to accept donations for this organization’s work. Birchwood Food Desert Fighters works to promote greater food access and a sense of community through weekly events\, a network of food share boxes\, food delivery\, community farming\, advocacy\, and more. Work party participants are encouraged to bring donations such as shelf-stable milk and proteins\, unopened toiletries\, and laundry detergent to the work party to support the Fighters’ work. \n\n\n\nEvent Details\n\n\n\nSpace at this event is limited and the estuary site will not be able to accommodate all volunteers. There will be additional work sites outside of the estuary. Registration is required to participate. You will receive additional information via email after registering for the event. \n\n\n\nRegister for this event\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho can join this event?\nEveryone! All ages and abilities are welcome. No previous volunteer experience is necessary. Please contact us at pkvolunteers@cob.org if you would like to request an accommodation or language interpretation. \n\n\n\n\nWhat do you provide and what should I bring? \nWe will provide tools\, gloves\, instruction\, snacks\, and free Tony’s coffee and Papa John’s pizza\, which are both being generously donated for this event. Please bring a water bottle\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and closed-toe shoes. \n\n\n\n\nWhat can I expect at the event?\nVolunteers will sign in and then be divided into small groups to begin volunteer work. We make sure to keep families and friends together in a group if requested. Volunteer work will include planting native trees and shrubs\, removing invasive plants\, and spreading mulch. \n\n\n\nThe event will conclude with closing remarks\, free pizza donated by Papa John’s\, and an optional tour of the Little Squalicum Estuary project. Various community organizations will have educational booths at the event to share more infomation about restoration work. \n\n\n\n\nWhy is this work important?\nVolunteers will plant native trees and shrubs\, which help filter pollutants from urban runoff to improve water quality\, stabilize streambanks to prevent erosion\, produce oxygen to improve air quality\, and provide food for fish and wildlife. These native plants will help protect the new 2.4-acre estuary\, benefitting the native species who will rely on it\, including Endangered Species Act-listed Puget Sound Chinook and priority species such as steelhead\, coho\, and southern resident killer whales. \n\n\n\n\nWhat is the Little Squalicum Estuary project?\nThe Little Squalicum Estuary project began construction in June 2022. The project will restore 4.85 total acres of coastal habitat including a 2.4-acre estuary and will remove a fish passage barrier. A significant portion of the project has been constructed but some of the work was delayed and will resume in December 2022/early 2023. \n\n\n\nFunding for this project is provided by: \n\n\n\n\nCity of Bellingham\n\n\n\nGreenways Levy\n\n\n\nWashington Department of Ecology Centennial Clean Water Program\n\n\n\nWashington Department of Ecology One-Time Grant Program\n\n\n\nWashington State Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account Grant Program\n\n\n\nWashington State Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program\n\n\n\nUS Fish and Wildlife Service National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant Program\n\n\n\nPort of Bellingham\n\n\n\nWhatcom County\n\n\n\nNooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA)\n\n\n\n\nA special thanks to Lehigh Northwest Cement Company\, Port of Bellingham\, Whatcom County\, and BNSF for their coordination on this project. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDirections: This event takes place at Little Squalicum Park at 640 Marine Drive. The sign-in area will be in the Northeast section of the park. Due to construction of the estuary\, it is easiest to access the park from the Bellingham Technical College (BTC) parking lot on the north side of BTC\, located off of W. Illinois Street. To get here\, travel northwest on Eldridge Avenue until it turns into Marine Drive\, then turn right onto W. Illinois. Turn right into the BTC parking lot and follow work party signs to the blue tents. Find directions to the site on GoogleMaps. \n\n\n\nTravel by bike or bus: Find your bike route at cob.org/bike and your bus route using the online trip planner at ridewta.com. \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nPhone: (360) 778-7105Email: pkvolunteers@cob.org
