SUMMARY:The Magnitude of All Things - Film + Conversation

Zoom Attendance: Complete this form to attend via Zoom. \n\n\n\nLearn more about this film about the “intimate parallels between the experiences of grief—both personal and planetary” and view the trailer. There will be a discussion panel immediately following this 90-minute film. \n\n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis\n“When Jennifer Abbott lost her sister to cancer\, her sorrow opened her up to the profound gravity of climate breakdown. Abbott’s new documentary\, The Magnitude of All Things\, draws intimate parallels between the experiences of grief—both personal and planetary. Stories from the frontlines of climate change merge with recollections from the filmmaker’s childhood on Ontario’s Georgian Bay. What do these stories have in common? The answer\, surprisingly\, is everything. \n\n\n\nFor the people featured\, climate change is not happening in the distant future: it is kicking down the front door. Battles waged\, lamentations of loss and raw testimony coalesce into an extraordinary tapestry\, woven together with raw emotion and staggering beauty that transform darkness into light\, grief into action.” \n\n\n\nView the trailer here. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Panelists: \n\n\n\nRev. SUMMARY:Pom Poko Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Pickford Film Center presents Pom Poko\, directed by one of the two founders of Studio Ghibli\, Takahata Isao\, who has also directed Only Yesterday\, Grave of the Fireflies\, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya\, among other films. Pom Poko concerns a group of tanuki\, often translated as “raccoon dogs.” These are animals native to Japan who have appeared in folklore and children’s songs for hundreds of years\, in which they are reputed to have shape-shifting powers similar to fox spirits. \n\n\n\nIn this film\, a group of tanuki near Tokyo decide to combat the encroaching suburbanization of their habitat in some very direct – and fanciful – ways. The result is highly entertaining for young and old while also being one of the strongest environmental parables from an animation studio that has always been concerned with the natural world and our place in it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nTickets for this 1:45 p.m. showing of Pom Poko on Saturday\, September 24 can be purchased on the Pickford’s website. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nPickford Film Center1318 Bay StreetBellingham\, WA 98225 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nEmail: info@pickfordfilmcenter.org Phone: (360) 647-1300 \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! SUMMARY:Become a Neighborhood Tree Ambassador (Work Party)
DESCRIPTION:During this fun\, hands-on work party at Whatcom Falls Park\, Whatcom Million Trees Project will show you how to directly build local climate resilience by protecting mature trees in your neighborhood from a tree-killing invasive — English ivy! You can attend one or both of the following events: \n\n\n\nVirtual Webinar/Q&A\n\n\n\nMonday\, September 19\, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nDuring the Sept. 19\, 6:30 p.m. Zoom session\, you’ll learn how to… \n\n\n\nfind the most climate-significant trees in your neighborhood\,recognize and safely\, easily remove silent-killer English ivy from neighborhood tree trunks on private or public property\,organize small neighborhood teams to remove such invasives;become a tree ivy “spotter” and advocate for your neighborhood;find the correct COB tree rules for your property or neighborhood\,report unauthorized tree removals — ideally before they occur\,advocate for stronger big urban tree protections\, and more.\n\n\n\nFollow-up Fun Work Party at Whatcom Falls Park\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 25\, 9 a.m. to noon \n\n\n\nOur free follow-up work party at Whatcom Falls Park on Sunday\, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon will be hands-on to remove English ivy from trees — without special tools\, skills\, or tree-climbing required. You’ll also learn how to compost the ivy successfully on-site so there are no disposal bottlenecks. Our maximum work party size is 25 attendees\, so please sign up now on the Whatcom Millions Trees Project website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe hope our Climate Action Week event will raise awareness about how Bellingham’s large\, mature trees are an integral part of needed climate action in our community. Technology and energy system changes alone won’t solve the problem. Responding to climate change means not only reducing our carbon emissions\, but capturing what’s already increasingly in the atmosphere. Trees play a major role in the latter and enhance our climate resilience to floods\, heat waves\, etc. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing and sharing with you — for the trees! \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP for either of these events on the Whatcom Million Trees Project website. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nSept. 19 Webinar: Hosted virtually on Zoom. Please RSVP to receive the Zoom link. \n\n\n\nSept. 25 Work Party: Whatcom Falls Park1401 Electric Ave Bellingham\, WA 98229 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nWhatcom Million Trees ProjectEmail: info@whatcommilliontrees.orgPhone: (360) 319-1370 \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week!
