SUMMARY:A HOPE PROJECT
DESCRIPTION:A Hope Project was created by three teens. It is a public art installation that tells a progressive story on yard signs illustrating hope and some actions we can each take to protect planet Earth. The signs are on Lynn Street between Eldridge Ave. and Northwest Ave and will be for approximately six months. The naming of A HOPE PROJECT\, the logo and the images were all made by Sylvia\, Lilly and Raya. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA HOPE PROJECT presents ideas to protect planet Earth. You too can write your ideas or draw a picture of an invention that you think will help to fix the climate crises. Put those ideas & inventions on a postcard and mail it to someone important to you. A grandmother. An uncle. Or a senator! We’ve got postage stamps and a mailbox! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nSigns will be posted on the length of Lynn Street between Eldridge Ave and Northwest Ave (corner of Yeager’s). \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nFrom A Child’s Point of ViewEmail: fromchildspointofview@gmail.com \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! Three prize drawing winners will be selected to choose between a solar backpack\, waterproof bike bag\, energy efficiency kit\, or zero waste shopping kit.  \n\n\n\nFor each entry\, you must submit a brief online feedback form for the event you attended and include a unique codeword for that event. SUMMARY:Become a Neighborhood Tree Ambassador (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Event Recording: Did you miss the webinar event on September 19? A recording of this event is available to watch! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDuring this virtual event (and follow-up work-party on Sept. 25)\, Whatcom Million Trees Project shows you how to directly build local climate resilience by protecting mature trees in your neighborhood! Attendees could attend one or both of these events: \n\n\n\nVirtual Webinar/Q&A\n\n\n\nMonday\, September 19\, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\nDuring the Sept. 19\, 6:30 p.m. Zoom session\, you’ll learn how to… \n\n\n\nfind the most climate-significant trees in your neighborhood\,recognize and safely\, easily remove silent-killer English ivy from neighborhood tree trunks on private or public property\,organize small neighborhood teams to remove such invasives;become a tree ivy “spotter” and advocate for your neighborhood;find the correct COB tree rules for your property or neighborhood\,report unauthorized tree removals — ideally before they occur\,advocate for stronger big urban tree protections\, and more.\n\n\n\nFollow-up Fun Work Party at Whatcom Falls Park\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 25\, 9 a.m. to noon \n\n\n\nOur free follow-up work party at Whatcom Falls Park on Sunday\, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon will be hands-on to remove English ivy from trees — without special tools\, skills\, or tree-climbing required. You’ll also learn how to compost the ivy successfully on-site so there are no disposal bottlenecks. Our maximum work party size is 25 attendees\, so please sign up now on the Whatcom Millions Trees Project website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe hope our Climate Action Week event will raise awareness about how Bellingham’s large\, mature trees are an integral part of needed climate action in our community. Technology and energy system changes alone won’t solve the problem. Responding to climate change means not only reducing our carbon emissions\, but capturing what’s already increasingly in the atmosphere. Trees play a major role in the latter and enhance our climate resilience to floods\, heat waves\, etc. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing and sharing with you — for the trees! \n\n\n\nPlease RSVP for either of these events on the Whatcom Million Trees Project website. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nSept. 19 Webinar: Hosted virtually on Zoom. SUMMARY:Forests\, Housing\, & Carbon: An Elegant Climate Solution
DESCRIPTION:Join Carbon Neutral Bellingham and the The Arcology Institute for a presentation\, break-out groups\, and mixer at Black Fern Coffee during Climate Action Week. This event will begin with a two-part presentation and halfway through\, we’ll separate into conversation break-out groups for a short time. \n\n\n\nAfter the conclusion of the presentation\, there will be a Sunset Social featuring a photo exhibition for both attendees and the general public with wines\, coffee and tea available for purchase from Black Fern Coffee. You can also choose to attend the Sunset Social event separately\, without attending the presentation beforehand. The presentation will explore the role forests play in carbon sequestration and how cities like Bellingham can best make use of this promising solution. \n\n\n\nBased on analysis from NOAA’s Global Monitoring Lab\, global average atmospheric carbon dioxide was 414.72 parts per million in 2021\, setting a new record high despite the continued economic drag from the COVID-19 pandemic. Countless scientists\, climate experts\, and government officials agree that 350 parts per million is the “safe” level of carbon dioxide — a level that has been exceeded for decades. \n\n\n\nSignificantly reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions is the first step to addressing this problem\, but in order to help reverse the damage that has already been done\, efforts must also be made to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequester it away. Fortunately there are a number of solutions being implemented\, ranging from improved farming practices to carbon-capture factories. \n\n\n\nJoin us at the free September 20 event to learn more. Space is limited\, so please RSVP soon! \n\n\n\nRSVP for Event\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nBlack Fern Coffee1211 Granary AveBellingham\, WA 98225 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nCarbon Neutral BellinghamEmail: hello@carbonneutralbellingham.com \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! DESCRIPTION:Our world is changing\, and it impacts not just humans but all that we share this planet with. As a part of Bellingham’s ALL IN for Climate Action Week\, Echoes Bellingham is gathering on the land\, to listen to the voice of creation. We’ll welcome the Fall Equinox\, honor the changing of the season and listen deeply to the earth and the sounds of creation who are crying out in the face of constant climate change. All are welcome to this gathering where the bulk of our time will be spent wandering in the wild. Fall is a season that offers so much to us if we take time to honor the transformation is beckons us into. \n\n\n\nWe are grateful to once again partner with and join on the land of Stillpoint at Beckside! \n\n\n\nAs a small action of solidarity we will take a free will offering for the Center for Responsible Forestry\, a volunteer run organization that advocates for the conservation of older forests on DNR managed land in Southwest Washington and the greater Puget Sound region. The health and protection of our forests is vital to the flourishing of all. \n\n\n\nWe encourage wearing layers as well as warm clothing for walking as the weather changes. This is a rain or shine event\, so please dress accordingly to the Northwest weather. We will have chairs to sit in around the fire\, but please bring warm items (blanket\, coats\, gloves\, etc.) to make yourself comfortable for our reflection times. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nStillpoint at Beckside1625 Huntley RoadBellingham\, WA 98226 \n\n\n\nThere is ample parking down by the Stillpoint cabin off of Huntley Road. Look for the Stillpoint parking signs by the metal gate\, that mark the entrance to the driveway lot. There is a short path that you will take up to the fire pit/gathering area. We encourage a handheld light source (flashlight\, headland\, lantern) to help guide your path and walk. \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nPastor EmmaEmail: emma@echoesbellingham.org Phone: (206) 200-3262 \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! There will be a discussion panel immediately following this 90-minute film. \n\n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis\n“When Jennifer Abbott lost her sister to cancer\, her sorrow opened her up to the profound gravity of climate breakdown. Abbott’s new documentary\, The Magnitude of All Things\, draws intimate parallels between the experiences of grief—both personal and planetary. Stories from the frontlines of climate change merge with recollections from the filmmaker’s childhood on Ontario’s Georgian Bay. What do these stories have in common? The answer\, surprisingly\, is everything. \n\n\n\nFor the people featured\, climate change is not happening in the distant future: it is kicking down the front door. Battles waged\, lamentations of loss and raw testimony coalesce into an extraordinary tapestry\, woven together with raw emotion and staggering beauty that transform darkness into light\, grief into action.” \n\n\n\nView the trailer here. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Panelists: \n\n\n\nRev. SUMMARY:Pom Poko Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Pickford Film Center presents Pom Poko\, directed by one of the two founders of Studio Ghibli\, Takahata Isao\, who has also directed Only Yesterday\, Grave of the Fireflies\, and The Tale of Princess Kaguya\, among other films. Pom Poko concerns a group of tanuki\, often translated as “raccoon dogs.” These are animals native to Japan who have appeared in folklore and children’s songs for hundreds of years\, in which they are reputed to have shape-shifting powers similar to fox spirits. \n\n\n\nIn this film\, a group of tanuki near Tokyo decide to combat the encroaching suburbanization of their habitat in some very direct – and fanciful – ways. The result is highly entertaining for young and old while also being one of the strongest environmental parables from an animation studio that has always been concerned with the natural world and our place in it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets\n\n\n\nTickets for this 1:45 p.m. showing of Pom Poko on Saturday\, September 24 can be purchased on the Pickford’s website. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nPickford Film Center1318 Bay StreetBellingham\, WA 98225 \n\n\n\nContact\n\n\n\nEmail: info@pickfordfilmcenter.org Phone: (360) 647-1300 \n\n\n\nPrize Drawing/Event Feedback\n\n\n\nReceive a prize drawing entry for up to five events you attend during Climate Action Week! SUMMARY:Become a Neighborhood Tree Ambassador (Work Party)
DESCRIPTION:During this fun\, hands-on work party at Whatcom Falls Park\, Whatcom Million Trees Project will show you how to directly build local climate resilience by protecting mature trees in your neighborhood from a tree-killing invasive — English ivy! You can attend one or both of the following events: \n\n\n\nVirtual Webinar/Q&A\n\n\n\nMonday\, September 19\, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
