City hall to host celebration at noon

January 06, 2016 - by Marie Marchand

The City of Bellingham will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at noon on Monday, January 18, at Bellingham City Hall, 210 Lottie Street. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Kulshan Chorus. The Black National Anthem will be performed by Annika Wolters. City Council Member Roxanne Murphy will be the Emcee.

Speakers will be Mayor Kelli Linville, Jamie K. Donaldson, and Cedric Johnson.  This year's theme is Women & Civil Rights

“During the past year we have seen a series of violent and bigoted acts taking place, some directed at women and women's rights, and at individuals because of their race, religion and/or sexuality,” said City Council Member Terry Bornemann, one of the event's organizers.  “Now more than ever, we need to come together as a community to celebrate and renew our commitment to the Civil Rights that Martin Luther King Jr. and so many others fought to bring into law.”

“As we face today's challenges, we can get inspiration from King and others who were part of historical movements for justice,” Bornemann said.

The event will be televised live on BTV10 and also streamed at www.cob.org. For more information, contact Marie Marchand at mmmarchand@cob.org or (360) 778-8202.
