Manage Waste

Pollution Prevention Specialists can help you reduce your waste and direct you to recycling and disposal options. They can also help you with proper storage for waste awaiting recycling or disposal. Follow these simple steps to reduce the impact of your waste stream:

1. Save on waste disposal costs by recycling as much waste as possible

Use the Whatcom County WasteWise tool below to find out how to recycle or dispose of hundreds of items in Whatcom County:

Sanitary Service Company (SSC) provides commercial garbage and recycling pick-up services. Learn about commercial recycling.

2. “Shut the lid”: Keep lids on outdoor garbage bins closed

When storing waste outside, keep lids on garbage bins closed to prevent rainwater from leaking contaminated liquids (called “leachate”) onto the ground and into waterways.

3. Properly dispose of all dangerous waste

Some wastes will need to be handled by a contractor.

4. Choose less toxic chemicals

Read labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
