Rental Registration Program launching this summer

All rental properties to register by August 1st, inspections begin in 2016

June 19, 2015 - by Emma Burnfield

The
Rental Registration & Safety Inspection Program, created by the
Bellingham City Council in March 2015, is on track to launch this
summer. In an effort to provide safe & healthy housing to Bellingham
tenants, all rental property owners will be required to register their
property with the City and have it inspected once every three years.
Detailed program information can be found at
www.cob.org/rentals, which is updated regularly.

The initial registration period will officially open July 1st, 2015 and
close August 1st, 2015. Registration will open online at
www.cob.org/rentals on or before
July 1st, and may also be completed in person at the Permit Center, or by
mail. All rental property owners of record will receive two notices by mail,
one in May and a second notice in June.

The implementation of this program is a true City-wide effort, involving
staff from Planning & Community Development, Information Technology
Services, Fire, Finance, and the Mayor’s Office. Serving as program specialist is
Emma Burnfield, who comes to the City after three years in property
management.

“I’m very excited to be working on this program,” said Burnfield, “it
will go a
long way in ensuring everyone has a safe and healthy place to live.”

Inspections are expected to begin in early 2016, and a

final inspection checklist is now available.
