DESCRIPTION:To commemorate passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the ongoing work to ensure equal access to housing for all\, the City of Bellingham will present a film screening followed by a panel discussion at Mount Baker Theatre’s Harold and Irene Walton Theatre.  \n\n\n\nThe film\, Decade of Fire\, is a powerful documentary set in the 1970s that shines a light on a time that a borough in the South Bronx experienced a plague of fires which destroyed much of its housing stock and displaced nearly half a million Black and Puerto Rican residents. The film explores the role of systemic neglect and discriminatory practices\, including redlining\, in shaping these conditions.  \n\n\n\nNow\, Bronx-born Vivian Vázquez Irizarry exposes the truth about the borough’s untold history and reveals how her community chose to resist\, remain\, and rebuild.  \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening\, attendees are invited to stay for a live discussion led by City of Bellingham staff with leaders from Bellingham and Whatcom County. The panel discussion will focus on the history and ongoing impacts of redlining\, restrictive covenants\, historic disinvestments\, and other impacts on individuals and the housing system by connecting these themes from the movie with realities in our own region\, providing insight and local context.   \n\n\n\nWhile the event is free\, registration is required.\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis event is the first of two we are hosting this April in recognition of Fair Housing Month. DESCRIPTION:Clear your clutter and reduce your environmental impact for Earth Day! The City of Bellingham is partnering with Sanitary Service Company (SSC)\, Recycling & Disposal Services Inc. (RDS)\, 1PC\, Bellingham Covenant Church\, and Whatcom County Health and Community Services to host a free recycling event. Stop by the parking lot of Bellingham Covenant Church any time between noon and 3 p.m. to drop off your hard-to-recycle items for donation and recycling.  \n\n\n\nWhat to bring:  \n\n\n\n\nUp to three grocery bags (or 2 banker boxes) of sensitive documents to be shredded in SSC’s shredder truck at the event and then recycled. No need to remove staples\, paper clips\, or notebook spirals. Ringed binders\, CDs\, and DVDs can not be shredded. (Shredded paper can’t typically be recycled through residential recycling services in Bellingham).\n\n\n\nOld TVs\, computer monitors\, desktop computers\, laptops\, tablets\, e-readers\, and portable DVD players to be refurbished or recycled \n\nNote: Data on the devices that are refurbished or recycled will be destroyed (more info here)\n\n\n\n\n\nSingle-use batteries (such as alkaline):\n\nAA\, AAA\, 9V\, C\, D\, and button cells\n\n\n\nLithium primary \n\n\n\n\n\nRechargeable batteries:\n\nLithium ion (Li-Ion)\n\n\n\nNickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd)\n\n\n\nNickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)\n\n\n\nNickel Zinc (Ni-Zn)\n\n\n\nSmall Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA/Pb)\n\n\n\n\n\nUsed athletic shoes and sneakers in any size or condition.
