There’s still time to submit your fun and fantastic idea to the second annual Bellingham Placemaking KAPOW! Design Competition. Applications are available at SustainableConnections.org and are due February 15, 2016.
The KAPOW! Competition, hosted by Sustainable Connections, invites individuals and/or teams to propose projects that will make the North State Street experience more lively and enjoyable for all. The City of Bellingham recently completed the North State Street Design Concept plan, which was based on input from State Street business owners, property owners, and residents. The plan highlights possibilities of how the city and the public can work together to make North State a really great street.
The goal of KAPOW! is to engage the community to conceive and propose their tactical urbanism and placemaking projects that will enhance the identity, vitality and health of North State Street. Applicants are encouraged to propose ideas that reflect Bellingham’s unique community identity, attract people, activate inactive spaces, provide amenities and promote people’s health, happiness, and well-being. Some tactical urbanism ideas include parklets, pop-up cafes, chair bombing, and guerilla gardening. Last year’s competition resulted in numerous projects being implemented in downtown Bellingham including the popular Commercial Street Night Market.
KAPOW! sponsoring partners include the City of Bellingham, Downtown Bellingham Partnership, Allied Arts of Whatcom County, Whatcom County Association of Realtors, and Northwest American Institute of Architects. Individuals and teams will be selected to pitch their idea to the community on April 21, 2016 at the Mount Baker Theatre, and winning ideas will receive seed funding to turn their concept into reality. Assistance will be provided for permitting, design and planning support.
