Opportunity Zone Forum scheduled for March 12

Learn about tax incentives intended to spur investments

March 05, 2019 - by Mayor's Office

A forum focused on Whatcom County’s three federally designated Opportunity Zones is scheduled for 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 at the Squalicum Boathouse, 2600 N. Harbor Loop Dr.

Lummi Nation and Bellingham’s Downtown, Samish Way and Waterfront districts are federally designated Opportunity Zones, which were added to the tax code in 2017. Opportunity Zones have tax incentives intended to spur investments that will create long-term community benefits, such as jobs and housing, and provide financial returns for eligible investors.

Assistant Director of the National Development Council (NDC) Melissa LaFayette will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Founded as a national nonprofit in 1969, NDC directs capital to support the development and preservation of affordable housing, the creation of jobs through training and small business lending, and the advancement of livable communities through investment in social infrastructure.

“This is a great opportunity for property and business owners in the zones, along with investors, developers and others to learn how they can benefit from these tax advantages while contributing to the vitality of our community,” said Port of Bellingham Economic Development Director Don Goldberg.

The hosted networking lunch is sponsored by the City of Bellingham, Port of Bellingham, Lummi Nation and the Whatcom Community Foundation. RSVP required: email rsvp@whatcomcf.org by March 8, 2019.
