Water main work to impact Sunset Drive

construction project will include detours, some night work

August 05, 2016 - by Amy Cloud, Communications and Outreach

Construction to replace a water main will impact traffic on Sunset Drive between Ellis and James streets later this month. The project is part of the City of Bellingham's annual water main replacement program, to help ensure reliable water service.

Beginning Monday, August 15, City contractors will be working to replace aging water mains and 1,700 feet of water piping on Sunset Drive. Preparation work, including pavement sawcutting and surveying, will likely begin on Wednesday, August 10.

During the day, eastbound traffic will occasionally be detoured onto Ellis, Illinois and James Streets.  Flaggers will direct traffic through the work site and detour route; emergency vehicles will receive priority passage through the work zone.

Because Sunset Drive is a heavily travelled route between I-5, PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center and nearby businesses, some work will be performed at night Mondays through Thursdays in order to minimize the impact on traffic.  Noise mitigation measures will be effect for nighttime work.

Those who regularly travel via Sunset Drive should drive with caution and obey flaggers' instruction. Drivers may want to allow extra time or consider alternate routes, if possible.
