Fallen officers memorial vigil event planned for Sunday

Public invited to vigil for 2015 fallen officers

May 10, 2016 - by Lt. Bob Vander Yacht

Bellingham, WA  On Sunday May 15, 2016 at 7 p.m. the Bellingham Police Department will be hosting a candlelight vigil to honor the 123 United States officers killed in the line of duty in 2015.

This is an open invitation to our community members to join us as we take this time to recognize the ultimate sacrifice given by each of these officers.  This is also a time to lend our support to the survivors of these officers; the parents, spouses, significant others, children, coworkers and the communities that they served.

Please join us as local Honor Guard conduct a flag presentation, local police leaders speak and luminaries are lit for each lost life.

For the safety of those attending this event the stretch of Grand Avenue between Lottie and Girard Streets will be closed to traffic. The Municipal Court parking lot at 2014 C Street is a short walk from the event and is available for overflow parking.  Vehicles with a proper specialty parking permit will be allowed into the BPD parking lot.

May 15 is the first day of National Police Week, which is recognized across the United States through ceremonies like ours.  There are many events scheduled at, and near, the National Law Enforcement Memorial located in Washington D.C.  2016 marks the 25th anniversary of National Police Week.

Questions related to this event should be routed to Lieutenant Bob Vander Yacht at 360-778-8765 or via email at rvanderyacht@cob.org
