Crack-sealing work underway

Street maintenance in Alabama, Cornwall, Sunset neighborhoods to impact traffic

September 27, 2017 - by Amy Cloud, Communications and Outreach

Each year, the City of Bellingham works to seal cracks in City streets as preventative maintenance. This year, crews are working north of Alabama Street, east of Cornwall Avenue and south of Sunset Drive. Weather permitting, work will conclude in two weeks.

Crack-sealing is an inexpensive preventative maintenance treatment that delays roadway deterioration. Crews grind open cracks and apply sealing material directly into cracks. Flexible, rubberized asphalt sealants bond to crack walls and move with the pavement, to prevent water from entering the road base. This extends the useful life of the road and greatly reduces maintenance costs.

During this work travelers should expect delays and exercise caution. Flaggers on site will direct drivers around any lane closures. Some parking may be restricted. The work is noisy and dusty, but fortunately not long-lasting.
