Road restrictions for Oct. 9-13

Block parties, Buddy Walk, street construction all impacts traffic this week

October 06, 2017 - by Amy Cloud, Communications and Outreach

Travelers can enjoy a week relatively free of distraction, although there are ongoing City construction projects to keep an eye out for, as well as several neighborhood block parties which can attract hundreds.  It continues to be important to be watchful for pedestrians and cyclists as well as traffic conditions.  Reminder, unless otherwise noted, businesses near street construction ARE open.

N. State Street, N. Forest Street, Orleans Street, Woburn Street
Work is underway to improve roadway striping on several streets around town. Drivers should expect short delays due to necessary lane closures, and at times, roads reduced to a single lane. Scheduling of work is weather dependent. For more information, contact Larry Scholten, P.E., project engineer, at ljscholten@cob.org or (360) 778-7923.

Between Alabama Street, Cornwall Avenue and Sunset Drive
In a section of Bellingham, crack-sealing work done as preventative maintenance, is nearly complete. Check here or on the City of Bellingham's home page (then click “news”) for more information.

West Maplewood Avenue – Northwest Ave to Alderwood Ave
Construction is underway on this multimodal improvement project, which will improve sidewalks, street surfacing, bike lanes, drainage, access and illumination.  Travelers and residents should expect flagging, temporary lane revisions, on-street parking restrictions, and intermittent delays for construction work.  In the coming weeks, the contractor will set up for a two-week road closure, expected to begin on Monday, October 16.   For more information, visit the City's web page for the West Maplewood Multimodal Improvements, or contact Stephen Day, P.E., project engineer, at smday@cob.org or (360) 778-7944.

James Street – at Woodstock Way
Woodstock Way is closed for work on the intersection of Woodstock and James Street.  There may be travel delays as drivers will be redirected around Sunset Square Center from Woodstock throughout this project, which is being done to improve safety as well as pedestrian and bicycle route connectivity.  James Street is open – but will be reduced to one lane of travel at times, with flagger guidance.  For more information, visit the City's web page, Woodstock Intersection Improvements, or contact Craig Mueller, P.E., project engineer, camueller@cob.org or (360) 778-7922.

Silver Beach Ave and Arbor Court
Construction on the City's new water pretreatment plant inside Whatcom Falls Park is mainly between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday, with occasional Friday work. Park visitors may experience traffic associated with that work with periodic flagging and limited trail access. Construction may be impacted by inclement weather. Parking at Arbor Court and adjacent access to the waterline trail is closed through 2018. For more information, visit the City's web page at DAF Water Treatment Plant or contact Freeman Anthony, P.E., project engineer, at fanthony@cob.org or (360) 778-7924.

Your Public Works staff provides this “road report” as a public service, based on currently available information. When traveling through a construction area – whether walking, cycling or driving – please be patient, proceed with caution and obey flaggers at all times. Planned road closures and restrictions are necessary to allow for a variety of work including resurfacing, sidewalk construction, water and sewer main work, and utility cuts. Dates, times and work locations may change, depending on inclement weather or last-minute changes in work schedules. For questions, contact AskPW@cob.org.
