City, County Public Works continue to work on snow routes

Most essential, primary streets first focus, then secondaries

Travel continues to be hazardous throughout Bellingham and greater Whatcom County. Tuesday afternoon’s warming trend will be followed by a nighttime freeze, which could make the commute tomorrow challenging.  The travelling public and those headed to work should be careful of freeze-hardened snow and sheet ice or consider utilizing Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) bus service.

Public Works crews for Whatcom County and City of Bellingham will continue to work around the clock throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 12-13.  Their focus will be to remove as much snow as possible on snow routes tonight, shifting to intensive sanding during early morning hours.

“We would like to recognize the skill and dedication of the several hundred Public Works employees and emergency personnel who are working diligently around Whatcom County to keep our community safe,” said Jon Hutchings and Ted Carlson, the Public Works directors for Whatcom County and the City of Bellingham respectively.  “On behalf of all of our communities, thank you!”

Snow routes (300 lane miles just in Bellingham) are arterials and highly traveled routes essential for Police, Fire and Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA).  That means that secondary and some residential streets will be untreated and likely slippery.

As a reminder to drivers:

  • Prepare yourself and your car, including clearing your windshield and all vehicle windows;
  • Allow extra time and stopping distance;
  • Drive for the conditions, with slower acceleration and at lower speeds; and
  • Use your headlights (to help other drivers see you).

City of Bellingham Public Works supervisors continue to monitor conditions and direct crews per standard protocols. For information on Whatcom County Public Works protocols, check here.
