This week may be the calm before the storm of summer events and activities; however, there are a few more graduations and a number of City street construction projects plus the State is beginning its paving project from Sunset Drive at I-5 heading east. All that will impact travel. Please travel with care.
NEW: Lake Whatcom – Silver Beach Ave/Huntington, Northshore at Maynard, Flynn/Prospect
A series of Lake Whatcom water quality projects (EV-159) begins with surveying, then saw-cutting. These projects will modify existing drainage infrastructure in order to improve water quality protections from pollution, stormwater runoff and phosphorous. Boulevard Park (pictured)
Construction activities continue at Boulevard Park at Bayview Drive. The entrance to Boulevard Park is open until further notice. Other traffic control, partial road closures and intermittent trail closures will continue into September. This work will mean access to the Park could be restricted on an intermittent basis. Cordata sidewalks – Aldrich Road
Construction activity on this project to install a bike lane and sidewalk along Aldrich Road from Mahogany Avenue to the existing bike lane and sidewalk just north of Larrabee Road is temporarily on hiatus, as crews await the arrival of light poles. The new bike lane and sidewalk will complete the sidewalk links along Aldrich Road to Cordata Elementary School. Lake Padden Park – sewer project
Restrooms are open during work to replace sewer facilities in and around them on the east side of Lake Padden Park near the dog park and playground. Work is currently suspended but should resume later this month with the installation of electrical and component systems, and the final system switch-over and decommissioning of the old system. Granary Avenue and Laurel Street
Construction is largely complete on this project to deliver new public and franchise utilities, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, parking, landscaping and street lighting, and street access to the waterfront. There is a new traffic flow on Roeder at Granary. Drivers should be prepared for construction activities around the intersection of Cornwall and Laurel, which remains closed. E. Maplewood Ave, W. Illinois Street, Lorraine Ellis Court – watermain replacements
Construction continues on Lorraine Ellis Court, on W. Illinois between Lynn Street and Northwest Avenue, and on E. Maplewood Avenue. Asphalt and concrete paving along W. Illinois Street from Lynn Street to Northwest Ave and along E. Maplewood from Northwest to Meridian is planned. The new watermains have been installed. Replacement of the roadway, driveways, pre-existing sidewalk and curbing is underway and final roadside cleanup of the shoulder and front yards has begun. Traffic control may be in place and some short detours could be necessary. Lakeway Drive and Lincoln Street
All contract work on the new HAWK signals on Lakeway is complete. This project provides a bike boulevard, new sidewalks, ramps, wayfinding and restoration, and new pedestrian crossing signals. WSDOT and Whatcom County
The State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is reducing northbound I-5 to one lane from Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning for road surface repair. In addition, WSDOT is repaving Sunset Drive, moving east from I-5, which could cause delays of “up to 20 minutes.”
