Winter weather limits many services in Bellingham

Severe weather shelters remain open

December 20, 2022 - by Riley Grant, Communications and Outreach

Crews are working around the clock to clear priority travel routes to assist essential services, such as Police, Fire, and Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA). Individuals are encouraged to limit unnecessary travel and many City facilities are closed today, including Arne Hanna Aquatic Center and all library locations. With many staff working remotely, some City services are available online only, such as utility billing and the permit center, and other services may be delayed.

Road2Home will activate the Bellingham Severe Weather Day Use Warming Center inside Bellingham Central Library Lecture Room on Dec. 20. Hours for the Warming Center are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  More information about emergency severe weather shelters is available from Whatcom County.

In addition to the pool closure, Civic Field and Winter day camp at Bloedel Donovan Park are closed today and will be reassessed Tuesday afternoon. Parks staff are working to clear parking lots and bathroom access, starting with the busiest locations, such as Little Squalicum Park, which is open for sledding. Many park openings will be delayed, and some parks may remain closed while staff address priority areas. Be careful, many areas have slick ice- and snow-covered spots and there are likely downed trees.

Report any issues in Parks or other weather-related issues on your SeeClickFix app or at cob.org/fix. More information available at cob.org/snow.

Whatcom Museum is closed on Tuesdays. Many library resources are available online. Any additional weather-related impacts will be shared throughout the day on the City’s social media channels.

Update for Wednesday, Dec. 21

This snow is not going anywhere quickly, so many City services will continue to be closed or limited on Wednesday, Dec. 21. City plows will continue to focus road-clearing efforts on busy, essential routes, and it will likely take a while before residential streets are addressed. Other impacts are listed below.

Parks maintenance staff are clearing parking lots and bathroom access as quickly as possible, but access is still limited to many parks and the following areas are closed:

  • Bayview Cemetery
  • Big Rock Garden
  • Civic Stadium (except restrooms)
  • Arne Hanna Aquatic Center

All Bellingham Public Library branches remain closed with many online resources available, and all Whatcom Museum facilities will be closed.

Bellingham Severe Weather Day Use Warming Center will be open inside Bellingham Central Library Lecture Room through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the County’s overnight severe weather shelter at Civic Field will operate through the end of the week.

In City Hall, the Finance office and Permit Center remain closed with online resources available, and some other services will be delayed.

Please avoid non-essential travel. When you need to travel, give plows plenty of room to do their job and drive for the road conditions and within your abilities.

Check back for updates.
