City issues recreational fire ban

Bellingham recreational fire ban issued in conjunction with other burn restrictions

August 16, 2023 - by Shawn Linville, Bellingham Fire Marshal

Due to the increased fire danger from dry weather and low fuel moisture levels in our region, the Bellingham Fire Department is prohibiting all recreational fires, effective at 4 p.m. Wednesday August 16, 2023.

All outdoor fires where solid wood is used as fuel are prohibited within Bellingham city limits until further notice. This outdoor fire ban includes campfires, outdoor fireplaces, and fires in fire pits or other fire enclosures regardless of protective screening or grating. Propane and natural gas fire pits and barbeques and charcoal barbeques are still allowed provided solid wood is not being burned. However, care should be exercised in the disposal of charcoal and ashes. Charcoal and ash should be discarded in a metal container and dowsed with water. The container must be kept at least 10 feet from any structures, vegetation, or other combustible materials for at least 72 hours.

The City of Bellingham fire safety burn ban is being issued in conjunction with Whatcom County, state Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Forest Service burn bans.

Escaped outdoor fires are one of the top causes of wildfires in the state. Our community is a special place. We all need to do our part to keep it safe, especially during increased fire danger periods. Reckless violation of these restrictions should be reported by calling 9-1-1. Violation of these restrictions can result in criminal charges and a minimum fine of $250.
