Proposals for a new signature event, as well as applications for annual tourism promotion grants, all due Sept. 6

Do you have an idea for a unique new event in Bellingham and the connections required to make it happen? The City of Bellingham is seeking proposals for a significant new “signature event” to be held annually during the spring, intended to encourage tourism, commerce, fun and community connection.

Ideas funded by prior signature event grants include Northwest Tune-up, SeaFeast and Bellingham Exit.

Signature event grant

The City anticipates committing up to three years of funding for purposes of providing seed money necessary to launch a new event. Up to $100,000 is available for the first year and approximately $70,000 is available for the two following years for one or more signature events. Signature event grants are funded by lodging tax dollars paid by hotel and motel visitors collected within the City of Bellingham.

The City’s request for signature event proposals seeks qualified producers or operators with the experience, industry contacts and innovative vision for launching an annual spring event. Applicants are encouraged to offer big, bold, creative new ideas. The purpose of the event is to enhance the existing quality of life for residents, encourage commerce, and maximize national and regional exposure. Ultimately, the goal is for the event to become self-sustaining.

Signature event awards are selected through a competitive process. Results will be announced later this year for inaugural events expected to begin in Spring 2026.

Annual tourism promotion grants

The City is also seeking applications for annual tourism grants. These competitive grants are also supported by lodging tax funds. Eligibility is broadly defined to encourage diverse participation and innovative proposals. One grant will be awarded to an event, program, or project that is less than three years old.

Special consideration will be given to events that occur during the off-season (between October and May), and to those that include partnerships with other agencies or events to reduce duplication of activities.

Proposals due by noon Friday, September 6, 2024. More information is available on the City’s tourism promotion grants page
