Electric Avenue bridge closed starting June 3 due to critical structural issues

Two-week closure anticipated; detour via Woburn Street, public transit updates coming soon

June 03, 2024 - by Riley Grant, Public Works Communications

The bridge on Electric Avenue at Whatcom Creek will be closed to vehicle traffic this evening, June 3, at approximately 6:30 p.m. due to critical structural failures identified during a recent inspection.

The safety of the public is our top priority. A routine inspection revealed more concerning issues than initially anticipated, necessitating the immediate closure.

“We understand this closure will cause inconvenience,” said Eric Johnston, Public Works Director, “but the safety of our community is paramount. The bridge will be closed while we develop a plan to get traffic moving safely across Electric Avenue as soon as possible.”

What you need to know:

  • A full closure of the bridge begins at 6:30 p.m. tonight, June 3, and will remain in effect for a minimum of two weeks.
  • Detour information: While crews finalize a comprehensive detour plan, including traffic revision signs, please utilize Woburn Street as the alternate route for Electric Avenue.
  • Public Transportation: Look for updates on potential route adjustments from Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) and Bellingham Public Schools coming soon.
  • Pedestrians and Bicyclists: The bridge will remain open for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Public Works department is working on a temporary solution to allow for a single lane reopening as soon as possible. This temporary solution will buy time to construct temporary reinforcements and create a long-term plan. Updates on the reopening timeline, capacity limitations, and the temporary solution will be provided as they become available.

We anticipate a minimum two-week closure, but a more precise timeframe for repairs and capacity limitations cannot be confirmed at this time. Visit the project webpage for up-to-date information: https://cob.org/project/electric-ave-bridge.
