Crews work through night to clear streets; residents urged to exercise caution

February 03, 2025 - by Riley Grant, Communications and Outreach

Update as of 11 a.m. Feb. 3

On February 3, most City buildings will close at or before 4 p.m. in response to ongoing winter weather and to allow staff to get home before dark and avoid deteriorating road conditions. We encourage residents to plan accordingly and complete any in-person business before early closures.

City Hall Update:

City Hall will close at 4 p.m.

Library Hours Update:

The Bellingham Central Library will operate under modified hours today, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All other branches are open regular hours.

Arne Hanna Aquatic Center:

The Arne Hanna Aquatic Center will remain open until 9 p.m. today, but please note that all swim lessons are canceled due to the weather.

We anticipate that all City services will be open as usual today, February 3, 2025, despite ongoing winter weather conditions. Snow accumulation across Bellingham varies greatly, with some areas on the south side of town receiving little to no snow, while the northern parts have seen up to 3-4 inches. City crews have been working overnight to clear snow routes, but residents are urged to exercise caution, as road conditions may be slushy or icy, and travel impacts continue to evolve throughout the day. We will provide updates later this morning if any changes occur.

Winter weather and travel advisory:

City crews have been working overnight to clear snow routes, with most major streets being bare and wet, though some slushy sections remain. In the northern parts of town, particularly around Meridian and Northwest, snow accumulation has reached up to 3-4 inches, though plows have cleared these areas as best as possible.

We will prioritize clearing main streets, key arterials, and routes essential for public transit, schools, and emergency services. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads unless necessary, as temperatures are expected to hover around freezing with lows dipping into the teens tonight. Icing conditions are a concern later this evening, and crews will continue to monitor and clear snow routes, focusing on residential streets, especially on the north side of town, after the morning commute.

If you must travel:

  • Walk or take a bus when possible.
  • If driving is necessary, proceed with extreme caution. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, and allow extra time for travel.

Reporting snow-related issues:

Residents are reminded to clear sidewalks and take measures to protect pipes during the snow and cold conditions. If you notice any snow-related issues, please report them to Public Works via SeeClickFix or call 360-778-7700 for urgent concerns. Our team is working diligently to address snow and ice issues across the city. Learn more at cob.org/snow.

Accessing City services online:

While some services may be delayed or adjusted today, many City services are available online. Residents can access utility billing, permits, and more through the City’s website. Final reminder: Enjoy the snow – but stay safe!

While snow can be a source of fun and beauty, residents are reminded to prioritize safety. Avoid unnecessary travel, stay informed on road conditions, and ensure you’re prepared for changing weather conditions throughout the day.
