Elected officials from Langley City, B.C., hosted elected officials from the City of Bellingham on Friday, Sept. 12, for a ceremonial tree planting to affirm a longstanding, cross-border relationship. Bellingham City Council President Hollie Huthman, Council President Pro Tempore Skip Williams, Council Member Michael Lilliquist, and Mayor Kim Lund attended the event.

“In a time where it can feel like we are defined by division, this ceremony reminds us of what brings us together,” Langley City Mayor Nathan Pachal said. “Our communities share the same air, water, and natural environment, and this tree represents our shared responsibility to protect it for future generations. It encourages us to continue building bridges, not barriers.”

“This tree is a symbol of our shared hope,” Mayor Lund said. “Like our connection as neighbors, the tree will grow stronger with time. We are grateful for this opportunity to honor our commitment to each other and to the environment we share. We know that what brings us together is stronger than what pulls us apart.”

A plaque at the base of the tree reads as follows:

“This tree was planted jointly by Langley City and Bellingham City Councils on September 12, 2025, in recognition of the stewardship of this land by Indigenous Nations for time immemorial and is in tribute to the diverse peoples whose contributions enrich and unite our communities.”

Langley City extended an invitation to the event after receiving a letter from City of Bellingham elected officials in May 2025. Council Members and the Mayor sent the letter to Langley and eight other British Columbia municipalities as a gesture of friendship and goodwill.

City of Bellingham elected officials will host Langley City elected officials for a visit at a future date.
