Inside Bellingham: April 18, 2025

New art downtown, Fair Housing educational workshop, boat inspection stations opening soon, and more: A news roundup from the City of Bellingham

April 18, 2025 - by City of Bellingham Communications Team

Vacant spaces downtown are getting a lot livelier

A handful of vacant storefront windows downtown are getting covered in custom art created by WWU design students as part of efforts to improve and enliven downtown Bellingham. At the same time, other vacant spaces are beginning to get set up as multisensory, immersive experience galleries. Look for the six window art installations as they are installed this month and come join a walking tour to see them all during First Friday Art Walk on May 2. The public opening for the immersive experience galleries will also start May 2 and will include free access to the spaces. There will be four galleries in all, each created by a different artist asked to transform the empty spaces into an alternate reality. Learn more about the temporary window art, immersive galleries and events that are fostering community activity and enjoyment downtown, thanks to support from lodging tax funds.

Interested in learning more about Fair Housing protections?

Join us for our Fair Housing educational workshop for tenants on April 21 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Bellingham Central Library. We’re excited to be joined by the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center, which will be sharing information about their Housing Stability Program and how it helps tenants and landlords resolve conflicts more constructively. This workshop is being offered as part of Fair Housing Month. Federal Fair Housing laws protect against discrimination in housing and support everyone’s right to equal housing opportunities — regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, or family status. Join us to learn more about these protections and visit our website to learn more about Bellingham housing laws and rental protections.

Boat inspection stations open on April 26

The 2025 boat inspection stations at Lake Whatcom and Lake Samish officially open next Saturday, April 26. As always, a valid 2025 Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) permit is required through the Whatcom Boat Inspection Program for all boats launching at Lake Whatcom and Lake Samish. You can purchase your permit now and save $10 by taking the AIS Awareness Course online. Please pay close attention when selecting your permit as our rates have changed this year. Together, we can keep new aquatic invasive species out of our local lakes to protect our drinking water and recreation. See you on the water!

Manage weeds naturally this spring

Spring has sprung and so have the weeds. As you tend your garden, consider managing weeds naturally.  Chemical weed killers can have unintended consequences for our pollinators, local wildlife, pets, kids and nearby waterways. By focusing on managing rather than eradicating every single weed, you can cultivate a healthy landscape while being kind to the environment. Learn how to Manage Weeds Naturally at cob.org/weeds
