The City is planning upgrades to the Cornwall Avenue Bridge to ensure safety and improve ease of transport. The goal of this preventative maintenance project is to repair the bridge deck, which crosses above the Burlington Northern Railroad (owned by BNSF Railway) near the Cornwall Avenue and East Maple Street intersection. The project plans include grinding and resurfacing the bridge and addressing settlement issues on the approaches. This work includes removing the old pavement, adding gravel backfill, installing new approach slabs, and repairing damaged sidewalks along the approaches. These planned improvements reflect the City’s commitment to maintaining critical infrastructure and making travel safer for all users.

Background
Built in 1964, the Cornwall Avenue Bridge spans 113 feet and serves as a vital connector in our community. During routine evaluations in April 2023, inspectors identified significant wear on the bridge deck and approach roadways, signaling the need for repairs. To promote long-term safety and reliability, the City is taking proactive steps to plan for the maintenance of this important structure. The planned upgrades will extend the bridge’s lifespan while keeping travel smooth and secure for everyone who relies on it.
Funding
This project has not yet secured funding. The City is currently pursuing grant applications to support project expenses.
