Project Overview
This project (ES593) will resurface the roadway, update bike facilities, install electrical services, and upgrade lighting on Samish Way and Maple Street within the Samish Way Urban Village to improve ride quality, safety, and comfort for people traveling the corridor. Improvements will be completed along Samish Way and Maple Street, between Bill McDonald Parkway and Ellis Street.

Project Status Winter 2026
Project design will begin this spring. The city expects to award the project in late summer 2027 and begin construction that fall.
Project Background
This corridor was identified for pavement restoration through the City’s pavement management program, which regularly evaluates roadway conditions across the transportation network. Lighting improvements had also been identified as a need along this stretch of Samish Way, and continued development in the surrounding area has increased travel along the corridor.
Funding
In winter 2026, this project was awarded a National Highway System Asset Management grant and is now fully funded for construction. That funding will allow the City to complete the resurfacing and lighting upgrades while preserving local pavement-maintenance funds for other roadway projects around Bellingham.
