A sewer main replacement project will impact residents of the Roosevelt neighborhood, as well as traffic on the heavily used Woburn Street between Barkley Boulevard and Texas Street, beginning Monday, April 24.
Drivers can expect delays as traffic is reduced to a single lane of travel from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning on Yew Street from Carolina to Texas Streets. Single-block closures and detours may occur in locations where it would be unsafe to maintain traffic during construction. From there, crews will be on Woburn Street at Texas Street, working north toward Barkley Boulevard. On-street parking along Woburn and Yew will be restricted at times.
To minimize the impacts to Barkley Village businesses, the sewer piping will be rerouted from Newmarket Street to Woburn Street on Barkley Boulevard via trenchless methods. At least one access into Barkley Village will be maintained at all times and no disruption to business services should occur.
The project will replace a sanitary sewer main that has been in use since 1938. Both to replace aging infrastructure and to accommodate continuing population growth at the north end of Bellingham. The sewer mains running under Woburn Street have reached their capacity.
In addition to urban growth in the Barkley neighborhood, more is anticipated in the northern portion of the city in coming years. These sewer mains will be upgraded to larger diameter piping that will be able to handle the increased volume produced by additional development. Woburn Street from Barkley Boulevard to Texas Street, Yew Street from Carolina Street north one block, and Woburn Street from Fraser Street to 500 feet south will receive improvements.
Property owners, businesses and neighborhoods directly affected by this construction project have been notified. Others with questions or seeking more information may email AskPW@cob.org or visit the Woburn Sewer Replacement project webpage.
