Whatcom Falls Park Woburn Trail and parking

Construction now underway for new trail connection

June 12, 2018 - by Nicole Oliver, Design and Development

Construction of the Whatcom Falls Park Woburn trail and parking area began last week. The contractor, Dirt Works Bellingham, began clearing and grading the site.  The project includes 1,555 lineal feet of new gravel trail connecting the waterline trail and Woburn Street, and an 11-car parking area to be located off Woburn Street north of the Fraser Street intersection.

“This trail and parking facility is a priority in the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Plan, which includes completing missing links in the Whatcom Creek Greenway & Trail system,” said Leslie Bryson, Parks & Recreation Director.

Currently trail users accessing the park from Woburn Street climb a 65 vertical foot stairway or traverse an existing steep, unimproved roadbed to access the upper part of the Whatcom Falls Park and trails.

Portions of the roadbed exceed 20% running grade. This trail project will provide users a developed trail to the upper part of Whatcom Falls Park with grades not to exceed 12%, along with paved trailhead parking to replace the informal parking in an unimproved area.

The project also includes signage, restoration, and mitigation for wetland buffer impacts and park seating.

The $380,000 cost of construction is funded with Greenway 3 Levy and Olympic Pipeline Settlement Fund.
