You can report non-emergent crimes online with Bellingham Police Department, and Whatcom County Sheriff.

Non-emergent abandoned vehicles, unauthorized encampments, and parking violations in the City of Bellingham are reported online as well.

Text to 911:  We are now able to accept text messages.  We always prefer someone to call 911 if possible.   If you are unable to do so safely you can text 911. 

3G Cancelled:  Wireless phone companies have announced that they will be shutting down their 3G networks.  Phones that don’t support at least 4G LTE will stop working.  AT&T announced its cancellation in February.  T-Mobile/Sprint will discontinue service between March and July.  Verizon will discontinue by the end of 2022.  Call your cell phone provider or visit them in-store to see if your ability to call 911 will be interrupted.  Phones without service, often called 911-only phones, may no longer be able to connect with emergency services.

Requirements

A minimum of one (1) year of experience in a position dealing with the public in stressful or time-sensitive situations is required.  Keyboard entry skills at a minimum of 40 wpm NET required.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a hearing evaluation prior to hiring.
  • Must have a telephone at place of residence.
  • Must be able and willing to work any shift and special shifts as assigned.
  • Must pass a police criminal convictions records check, background investigation, psychological exam, polygraph exam, and medical screening prior to hire. 

Salary and Benefits

  • What-Comm Dispatcher-in-Training: $29.45
  • What-Comm Dispatcher: Starting rate is $30.92/hr. The full hourly range is $30.92-38.41.
