Join the more than 1 billion people worldwide taking action to “invest in our planet” in honor of Earth Day this year! Below is a list of family-friendly activities offered by the City of Bellingham during the week of April 17-23 (and beyond) in celebration of Earth Day.

Volunteer at a Work Party to Restore Habitat

The City is offering a community work party along Padden Creek in Fairhaven Park on Saturday, April 23. We will remove invasive plants and apply mulch to improve habitat and water quality. Tools, gloves, instructions, snacks, Woods coffee, and Papa John’s pizza are provided. Please register in advance – spots are limited!

Submit Climate Action Photos in a Competition

Photographers of all ages and skill levels can participate in the annual Essence of Bellingham Photo Competition. One award available is the Climate Action Award, which honors images that capture actions our community is taking to address climate change and its impacts. Entries are due by Sunday, May 1, 2022. Contribute to a Community Art Project at the Lightcatcher Building

Leading up to Earth Day on April 22, the Whatcom Museum will have a massive paper mâché planet in the Lightcatcher building. Our world is full of wonderful and unique animals, and that’s where you come in. Join us in the Family Interactive Gallery (FIG) to make or color an animal, and then add it to our huge globe. By April 22, we hope to see an amazing variety of life spread throughout the globe, just like in real life. This activity is suitable for all ages. Cost is included with admission or free for members.

Join the Bellingham Children’s Library for Earth Day Themed Storytimes

Bellingham Children’s Library will present Earth Day themed online Storytimes the week of April 17 -23 for kids ages birth – 5 years. Enjoy stories, songs and craft ideas that inspire a connection with and wonder of nature. Complete a quick and free registration form to receive the Storytimes links.

“Check Out” a Washington State Park

Backpacks with a limited-edition Discover Pass are available to be checked out at the Bellingham Public Library for two weeks at a time. The Discover Pass allows free parking at Washington State Parks. The backpack includes a set of binoculars, three field guides, and a map of all Washington State Parks.

Bellingham Public Library has curated a special book list for children titled Earth Day: Books for Kids. Enjoy a variety of Earth Day related children’s book available in digital and physical formats.
