Earth Week 2024 Events

Join the more than 1 billion people worldwide who celebrate Earth Day each year! Below is a list of family-friendly activities offered by the City of Bellingham in celebration of our planet. Earth Day is Monday, April 22.

Learning Together Forum: Powering a Sustainable Future

Thursday, April 18, 2:30-4 p.m. at Central Library Lecture Room
Join Bellingham Public Library and WWU’s Sustainability Engagement Institute and Center for Community Learning for a series of forums on Learning Together Through Climate Upheaval. Share your hopes and challenges related to creating a more sustainable region and meet others doing inspirational work. We’ll leave with new connections and opportunities for action. Forums are free and open to all. Refreshments provided.

Earth Day Community Work Party at Squalicum Creek

Saturday, April 20, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Squalicum Creek Re-route site
Join us for a community work party at the Squalicum Creek Re-route restoration project site. Together, we will remove invasive plants to improve fish and wildlife habitat and help water quality in Squalicum Creek. Tools, gloves, coffee, snacks, and a free bike valet are provided. All ages and abilities are welcome. Please register in advance – spots are limited!

Celebrating our Amazing Earth Family Activity Day

Saturday, April 20, 12-4 p.m. at Lightcatcher Building
Celebrate our amazing earth and all the creatures that inhabit it at the Whatcom Museum! We’ll have hands-on crafts and activities -construct a slithering snake chain or create a very special habitat for your favorite creature. And don’t miss the Reptile Lady! She’ll be showing off leaping lizards, terrific tortoises, and riveting reptiles in the Lightcatcher courtyard at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Earth Day Recycling Drop-off Event

Saturday, April 20, 12-3 p.m. at 1530 E Bakerview Road
Clear your clutter and reduce your environmental impact by bringing your hard-to-recycle items to our drop-off event! Stop by any time between 12 to 3 p.m. with your sensitive documents for shredding and recycling, electronic waste for refurbishment or recycling, and used athletic shoes for donation. Leave with a free tree to take home with you.

Earth-Themed Children’s Storytimes

Multiple dates
All sessions of Little Storytime, Time for Tales, and Preschool Storytime held between April 22-25 will celebrate Earth Week with nature- and earth-themed storytimes! Join the Bellingham Public Library for one of these events at the Central or Bellis Fair branches.

National Geographic Exhibit at the Museum

All week at Lightcatcher Building
Witness some of the most surprising animal behavior in Greatest Wildlife Photographs, an exhibition from National Geographic. The very best wildlife pictures from the pages of National Geographic magazine have been chosen to be displayed at the Whatcom Museum. Check out the display during Earth Week or any time between March 9 – September 8.

Bellingham Public Library has curated a special book list for children titled Earth Day: Books for Kids. Enjoy a variety of Earth Day related children’s book available in digital and physical formats.

Bellingham Public Library has an environmental themed book list in honor of Earth Day titled “This World We Call Home”. The list includes a variety of recently published print and eBook titles, as well as helpful website links.

“Check Out” a Washington State Park

All week
Backpacks with a limited-edition Discover Pass are available to be checked out at the Bellingham Public Library for two weeks at a time. The Discover Pass allows free parking at Washington State Parks. The backpack includes a set of binoculars, three field guides, and a map of all Washington State Parks.

Follow the path of rain after it falls! Explore our urban and parkland areas on five self-guided tours while learning how we keep the water clean, filter out pollutants, and prevent flooding. Let our mobile-friendly site be your guide with maps, historical photos, and underground drawings.
