Downtown Forward Goals

Downtown Forward is a roadmap directing City resources downtown. It’s also a plan that others have roles in as well – roles as business owners, artists, developers, visitors and residents.

These goals reflect the City’s aims for 2024, and we will be asking the community to refine and update them during the next phase of Downtown Forward. For more information about how to engage in shaping downtown Bellingham’s future, visit engagebellingham.org.

Our goals: Downtown Bellingham is a neighborhood for everyone because it …

Downtown is an inclusive and comfortable gathering place for everyone. Community expectations for behavior are clear and enforced, and public spaces are clean and beautiful.

Downtown is the community’s gathering place, with artwork woven into the public and private realm in ways that surprise and delight. Historic buildings are preserved and celebrated, reflecting the unique character of the city. It is the entertainment center of the county, drawing tourists and locals alike.

Downtown is an economic engine of Whatcom County that attracts interest and investment in new businesses and redevelopment of vacant properties. A variety of shops and services create a unique retail environment and a desirable workplace.

Downtown is a multi-modal transportation hub that showcases sustainable development and adaptability. Building and public space design supports community well-being and climate resilience.

Downtown has a variety of housing choices for a range of incomes and living situations. Residents are able to access high-quality services and amenities to meet their daily needs.
