Pine Street Crossing

Project Overview

This project will upgrade the existing railroad crossing to quiet zone standards and add a multi-use path crossing. The Pine Street Crossing safety improvements are part of the City’s efforts to upgrade railroad crossings in the waterfront area to complete a quiet zone while also improving pedestrian and bicycle access in the area. Construction will include pedestrian and bicycle facilities from the Cornwall/Pine Street intersection across the railroad tracks to Wharf Street.

An additional extension to the South Bay Trail along Wharf Street will require more funding to complete. Once complete, this trail will improve connectivity between Cornwall Avenue and Boulevard Street and the future Salish Landing Park, helping to fulfill plans in Bellingham’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plans.

Project Status – 2025

Project design started in November 2024. The project is listed as funded in the City’s Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program. Project construction is anticipated for 2026.
