Fiber Optic Network

The City’s existing fiber network supports many critical City services such as fire, police, water, wastewater, streetlights, traffic lights, and connects its buildings to a network. We also provide services to Bellingham Public Schools, Whatcom Transportation Authority, regional 911 services, and the Office of Emergency Management.

Fiber Network Comprehensive Plan

The City Council adopted the 10-year Fiber Network Comprehensive Plan on Feb. 24, 2025.

Key points of the Fiber Network Comprehensive Plan:

Guiding Principles

  • City Operational Needs First: Ensure the fiber network effectively supports City services.
  • Financial Responsibility: Prioritize cost-effective solutions without relying on federal funding.
  • Long-Term Resiliency: Future-proof the network against disruptions and evolving technology.
