Little Squalicum Pier will be closed intermittently through February 15 while crews complete the installation of solar and wind-powered lighting on the pier.
The large brown boxes with the reflective red tape contain the batteries for the lighting system.
These lights represent the Parks & Recreation Department’s first off-grid power project. Thank you for respecting the closures while we finish this important work!
We’re excited to celebrate the opening of Storybrook park in the Birchwood neighborhood. According to Parks & Recreation Director Nicole Oliver, this new neighborhood park might just be our most magical one yet. Insider tip: Keep an eye out for gnomes on the nature trails!
Join us for a ribbon-cutting celebration on Friday, Feb. 13, at 2:45 p.m. We’ll enjoy brief remarks from Director Oliver and Mayor Kim Lund, and kids can be the first to explore the whimsical new playground!
Many Parks & Recreation employees are moving from City Hall to a new City building next week.
The Design & Development, Community Recreation, and Administrative teams will be joining the Parks & Recreation Operations team at the Pacific Street Operations Center.
This move not only brings together the full Parks & Recreation Department under the same roof, but also creates efficiencies and easier connections for the many projects and collaborations with Public Works staff.
1/4: Good news! All the trails in Little Squalicum Park will be open starting this afternoon (11/17), including a new trail and pedestrian bridge that offer views of the recently completed Little Squalicum Estuary.

This February, our hearts are filled with love for our dedicated community volunteers who braved the winter weather to improve Bellingham’s parks, trails, and streams at two recent Saturday Work Parties, including one on Valentine’s Day! 💚
At Galbraith Mountain Trailhead on February 7, 40 volunteers (alongside our friends at the Whatcom Land Trust) helped enhance trailside habitat by: · Planting 60 native shrubs · Rescuing 200 native conifers · Removing 3 yd³ invasive species · Spreading 32 yd³ mulch
At Julianna Park on February 14, 76 volunteer valentines 💘 helped us and our friends at Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association as we improved critical riparian habitat near East Bear Creek by: · Removing 7 yd³ invasive weeds · Spreading 8 yd³ mulch · Creating 8 on-site compost piles · Planting 107 native trees and shrubs
A big thank you to Woods Coffee, Tony`s Coffee, and Bellingham Bagelry for caffeinating and feeding our volunteers!
Join us at our next Community Work Party on Saturday, February 21st at Cornwall Park, where we’ll work to improve the health of the forest understory by planting native trees and shrubs. Sign up at: www.volunteerbellingham.org
All of our work parties are funded by the Greenways Levy. 🌲
