A big thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday, January 18 for our Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Community Work Party with NSEA - Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association and the City of Bellingham Public Works Natural Resources at Squalicum Creek Park.
Your dedicated service honors Dr. King`s vision of a Beloved Community. We took action together to improve a well-loved community park, collect donations for Birchwood Food Desert Fighters, and invest in our shared future. To learn more about the legacy of Dr. King and how you can continue to support his vision, visit: The King Center.
With the help of 323 volunteers, we were able to remove 30 cubic yards of invasive weeds, plant 500 native trees and shrubs, and spread 60 cubic yards of nourishing mulch to promote a healthy and bio-diverse community green space in this previously industrialized area.
The work we accomplished enhances the riparian buffer of Willow Spring, helping to keep the water cold, clean, and clear for salmon by providing shade, bank stabilization, and filtering out pollutants.
To learn more about how ecological restoration in riparian areas helps improve salmon habitat, we encourage you to reach out to our friends at the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association.
One last thank you to the amazing Tony`s Coffee for keeping us warm and energized, and Zeeks Pizza and Bellingham Pizza Time for donating delicious pizzas for our volunteers to re-fuel with after all of their hard work!
