Each April is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week where we get to celebrate our fantastic workgroup who answers every 9-1-1 call in Whatcom County.

Every minute of every day, our telecommunicators are on the other end of the phone for those who are having an emergency. They use their incredible skill to calm the situation and get all the vital information for the responding units. At the same time, they are the steady voice on the other end of our radios - keeping us grounded and guiding our response based on the information they are gathering.

Please thank our telecommunicators this week and each week. Their job is to be the voice upon which the community and each law enforcement officer can rely. That is a huge job, and we thank them for that.

Built in friends for life, and in the case of our BPD siblings, they are also co-workers. Meet Field Training Officer C. Johnston, Badge #259 and his brother, Detective K. Johnston, Badge #274.

Both are proud Ferndale High School graduates and followed their father into a law enforcement career. Chris started with Ferndale Police Department - Washington and was hired by BPD in 2011. Keith started with Mount Vernon Police Department - WA and was hired by BPD in 2014.

Their father, Lt. Mike Johnston (ret.) Badge #117, worked at BPD from 1982-2018. So, for four years all three worked at BPD at the same time - a family of law enforcement!

BPD has had two other sets of siblings in the ranks, brothers Fred and Rick Nolte, as well as sisters Danette Beckley and Jana Bouzek.
