About the Public Works Department

​​​The Public Works Department is the largest department in the City of Bellingham. Public Works’ responsibility for Bellingham’s infrastructure impacts every resident’s experience. Public Works is responsible for street maintenance, traffic lights, traffic signs, ADA crossings, water to drink and use, wastewater treatment, stormwater management, environmental restoration and natural resource protection, transportation planning, capital projects, parking, and more.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to enhance Bellingham’s quality of life through the construction and operation of a safe, effective physical environment; protect public health, safety and natural resources; and provide neighborhoods, businesses and visitors with efficient, quality services necessary to meet the demands of our growing, diverse community.
