Unauthorized Encampments: Addressing Public Safety Concerns

The City acknowledges the complexities surrounding unauthorized encampments on public and private property. These encampments can create public health and safety hazards due to sanitation and waste accumulation, impacting both the residents of the encampment and the surrounding community. We are committed to addressing these challenges while balancing public safety, property rights and the well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders and/or behavioral health challenges.

Our Approach

The City plays a crucial role in managing unauthorized encampments on public property, while also working with property owners to address issues on private land. Our approach involves:

  • Prioritizing public safety: We prioritize cleaning up encampments that pose significant risks to public health and safety.
  • Outreach and support: We work with outreach teams to connect individuals experiencing homelessness with essential resources and services.
  • Enforcement: We enforce relevant codes and regulations to ensure public safety and address violations.
  • Community collaboration: We encourage community involvement and collaboration to find effective solutions.
