City conducting census of newest annexation

Annexed area is on Mount Baker highway

January 15, 2016 - by Jacquelyn Lynch, Planning Department

The City of Bellingham will be conducting a census of its newest annexation on Mount Baker Highway between January 18 and February 2.

The City Planning Department will be conducting the census of the lands just annexed by the City of Bellingham near Sunset Drive/Mt. Baker Highway and Dewey Valley Road. Citizens will be asked to identify themselves so that the City's population count can be updated.  State tax money is distributed on the basis of population, and an accurate count allows the City to receive its fair share of taxes to provide essential services.

On November 16, 2015, the Bellingham City Council approved the E. Bakerview Road/Mt. Baker Highway annexation proposal. The annexation area is approximately 163.5 acres in size and located in the City's Northern Urban Growth Area. It shares a common boundary with the City's Irongate Neighborhood to the west and Barkley Neighborhood to the south and east, with most of the newly annexed area included in the Barkley Neighborhood. On February 1, 2016, the annexation area is officially part of the City of Bellingham, and therefore City staff will be conducting this door-to-door census of the annexation area to obtain accurate population and housing counts.
