Body of missing man found

Liberato Trotta's body found on S. State Street

March 02, 2017 - by Danette Beckley, Public Information Officer

The body of Liberato Trotta, who was reported missing on February 20, was discovered yesterday by construction workers.  Workers on site at a complex in the 400 block of S. State Street noticed a body in the brush, just west of the complex.  The terrain is a steep hillside covered in blackberry bushes.

Trotta suffered from dementia and walked away from his home.  Search and Rescue, detectives, bike officers, drones, and search dogs were some of the resources used to try to find Trotta.  There were numerous volunteers who came out to search for Trotta as well.  While the outcome is not what the Bellingham Police Department had hoped for, we are thankful for the amount of support shown by the community in the search for Trotta.

Crime Scene Investigators and Detectives worked yesterday to gather evidence at the scene to help put the pieces of the death investigation together.  This is an ongoing investigation, and more evidence will be available pending an autopsy by the medical examiner.
