City departments phone service interrupted by CenturyLink damage

Alternative phone number available, to reach affected departments

Due to a damaged CenturyLink cable in Bellingham, several City of Bellingham (COB) departments have been without phone service since approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30. The damage specifically affected phone numbers with a “778″ prefix, which includes COB offices as well as other agencies, businesses and individuals.

Phone service to Bellingham Police dispatch and Public Works, as well as calls to 911, are not affected.

Approximately half of City departments' phone service remains impacted as of 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, so the City has established a temporary, alternate phone number to receive and forward calls for those departments.

For anyone attempting to reach a City of Bellingham employee or department:

  • First, phone the normal business number;
  • If you receive a busy signal, phone (360) 778-7999
  • For life-threatening emergencies, phone 911.

CenturyLink technicians have been working to repair the damaged cabling since early Sunday. This service interruption appears to be  unrelated to last week's widespread 911 outage.
