Virtual open house scheduled for update to Stormwater Comprehensive Plan

Public meeting planned 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, via Zoom

September 03, 2020 - by Riley Grant, Environmental Education Coordinator

Learn more about how the City manages storm and surface water and proposed needs in the future at a virtual open house scheduled for 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2020.

The public is invited to a virtual open house on the proposed update to the City of Bellingham’s Stormwater Comprehensive Plan. The proposed plan identifies capital improvement needs and costs for City budgeting purposes to address population growth and development, ongoing maintenance requirements, safety issues related to flooding, and environmental concerns such as stormwater impacts to water quality and fish habitat. This is the first update to the plan since 2007.

Due to COVID-19 and restrictions limiting large public gatherings, the virtual open house will offer the public the opportunity to seek information and provide input to Bellingham Public Works staff. Speakers will describe the current condition of the City’s stormwater infrastructure, a range of potential investments to address current issues, and mechanisms to pay for the future work. Staff will be available to address questions and receive comments from the audience.

In addition, those unable to attend or access the virtual open house, may review the Stormwater Comprehensive Plan presentation from the open house and share ideas and provide comment using the City of Bellingham’s new Engage Bellingham website.

Draft plan feedback provided via the Engage Bellingham site and the virtual open house will be reviewed and considered by staff and City officials throughout the duration of this project. Upon completion of public review, Public Works staff will recommend a set of alternatives to City Council for approval.  In addition to the open house, the City Council heard a presentation on the proposed actions at their meeting on August 31.
